During the late '90s, it seemed like prog rock had finally achieved extinction. But fast forward ten years later and the genre was thriving once more - as evidenced by the arrival of such groups as Astra and their 2009 full-length debut, THE WEIRDING (which includes some very Roger Dean-inspired cover artwork). Hailing from an area not exactly known for spawning prog goliaths (San Diego), THE WEIRDING is not all about fingers flyin' on the fretboard, however, as the group touches upon the spacy sounds of early Pink Floyd and King Crimson on the title track. And this same approach carries over throughout the entire album, as evidenced by such ditties as "Silent Sleep" and "Ouroboros," both of which follow the prog prerequisite of songs that stretch over ten minutes in length (and in this case, over 15 minutes). For the first time since 2003's ON AND OUT, sibling singer-songwriters Thom and Greg Moore add a rhythm section to their indie-folk tunes. The resulting delicate blend is akin to minimalist alt-country acts like the Scud Mountain Boys or Low, but at heart, the Moore Brothers are unrepentant folk-rockers a la Simon and Garfunkel, early Byrds, and Buffalo Springfield. Highlights include the oblique title track and the first single "Good Heart, Money and Rain," featuring a guest appearance by Joanna Newsom.
On their fifth album, Greg and Thom Moore sound like some sort of bizarre-world version of Crosby, Stills & Nash; the songs may be willfully eccentric, but the beautifully rendered harmonies, subtly interwoven guitar work, and concise, unobtrusive rhythm section recall the glory days of California soft rock, though the vibe isn't mellow so much as it's hazy and a bit buzzed, though not unpleasantly so.
