| | Astra Weirding CD (2009)
Tinne
$10.69 During the late '90s, it seemed like prog rock had finally achieved extinction. But fast forward ten years later and the genre was thriving once more - as evidenced by the arrival of such groups as Astra and their 2009 full-length debut, THE WEIRDING (which includes some very Roger Dean-inspired cover artwork). Hailing from an area not exactly known for spawning prog goliaths (San Diego), THE WEIRDING is not all about fingers flyin' on the fretboard, however, as the group touches upon the spacy sounds of early Pink Floyd and King Crimson on the title track. And this same approach carries over throughout the entire album, as evidenced by such ditties as "Silent Sleep" and "Ouroboros," both of which follow the prog prerequisite of songs that stretch over ten minutes in length (and in this case, over 15 minutes). Unlike many other modern-day prog rock revivalists, Astra recalls a day when the genre was more about creating sweeping mood shifts than mere mind-numbing ...

| | Susannah Blinkoff Let's Pretend CD (2008)
Tinne
$17.75 Susannah Blinkoff is a multi-talented singer-songwriter whose catchy, groove-driven alternative/adult contemporary pop-rock songs have been featured on MTV’s hit show “My Super Sweet Sixteen”, in the feature film “My Super Ex-Girlfriend”, as well as heard on over 200 college radio stations across the country. Her warm, intimate, clear-as-a-bell voice turns sexy and sultry in a heartbeat -- inspiring comparisons to Diana Ross, Sheryl Crow and Eva Cassidy -- while her accomplished background as an actress gives her a chameleon-like performance style that's at home in a variety of musical genres. Her latest album LET’S PRETEND is a diverse collection of soulful, “hooky”, pop-rock songs that are original and radio-friendly at the same time.Born and raised in New York City, Susannah began singing professionally in clubs and off-Broadway when she was twelve. As an actress, she has appeared in numerous TV movies, sitcoms and plays on both coasts. She made her Broadway debut in THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE GOES PUBLIC and is featured on the show’s cast album recording. She is also a published playwright and screenwriter who co-wrote the film BELLYFRUIT which premiered at the L.A. Independent Film Festival and ran on Showtime. For that film, she wrote and produced the opening title song with hit music producer Stephen Bray (Madonna, “The Color ...
| | Moore Brothers Aptos CD (2009)
Tinne
$12.79 Personnel: Thom Moore , Greg Moore (vocals, guitar); Joanna Newsom (harp); Neal Morgan (drums, percussion). Recording information: Dead Chuffed Studios, San Francisco, CA; Station To Station Studio, Grass Valley, CA; The Studio That Time Forgot, San Francisco, CA. For the first time since 2003's ON AND OUT, sibling singer-songwriters Thom and Greg Moore add a rhythm section to their indie-folk tunes. The resulting delicate blend is akin to minimalist alt-country acts like the Scud Mountain Boys or Low, but at heart, the Moore Brothers are unrepentant folk-rockers a la Simon and Garfunkel, early Byrds, and Buffalo Springfield. Highlights include the oblique title track and the first single "Good Heart, Money and Rain," featuring a guest appearance by Joanna Newsom. On their fifth album, Greg and Thom Moore sound like some sort of bizarre-world version of Crosby, Stills & Nash; the songs may be willfully eccentric, but the beautifully rendered harmonies, subtly interwoven guitar work, and concise, unobtrusive rhythm section recall the glory days of California soft rock, though the vibe isn't mellow so much as it's hazy and a bit buzzed, though not unpleasantly so. After a few spins of Aptos, it becomes evident that trying to figure out what the Moore Brothers are singing about is more trouble than it's worth (a tune that seems to be about some hipster gal who plays the drums when she isn't feeling alienated is called "Iraq," which makes about as much sense as anything else on this album), but if the literal meaning is elusive at best, the surreal word puzzles ...
