No Control album
$11.19 Often, supergroups wind up dominated by one particular personality - think Eric Clapton in Derek & the Dominos, Jack White in the Raconteurs -- which makes the egalitarianism of Them Crooked Vultures all the more remarkable. Of course, when it comes down to it, it's a group of three natural-born collaborators: John Paul Jones, the old studio pro who gravitated toward provocative partners after Led Zeppelin's demise, teaming up with R.E.M. as easily as he did with avant-queen Diamanda Galas and nu-folkster Sara Watkins; Dave Grohl, who hopped into an empty drummer's chair whenever the opportunity presented itself; and Josh Homme, who set up a mini-empire based entirely on jam sessions. If Them Crooked Vultures brings to mind Homme's projects more than Grohl's or Jones', it's largely due to his role as lead vocalist and how guitar can push ...
| | Rosanne Cash List CD (2009)
No Control CD music
$14.45 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks ...

$49.49 Recorded live at Madison Square Garden, New York, New York on November 27-28, 1969.
Returning to the American concert scene after a three-year layoff, the Rolling Stones recorded GET YER YA-YA'S OUT! during a triumphant two-date stand at Madison Square Garden in late November 1969 that found B.B. King and Ike & Tina Turner opening for them. Having amassed an impressive recorded output during their three years away from touring, ...

| | Kool Keith Lost Masters Vol. 2 Vinyl LP (2005)
No Control music CDs
$12.65 After the unimpressive first volume, no one was begging for another dig through Kool Keith's discarded tracks. Bringing the momentum built with the Diesel Truckers album to a screeching halt, Lost Masters, Vol. 2 lays out a claustrophobic set of tracks with little care for flow and plentiful filler, and that's considering outtake album standards. Some tracks like "Feel About You" show some promise until the man delivers a rap that is so uninspired it seems to be written by the random Kool Keith lyric generator computer program ("The voodoo's on that dude/The whack comedian that ate the wrong food"). He also goes back to that "the record company is going to sell 20 million copies" line he's already beat to death and boasts about his skills three times more than usual. Worst of all, his production is too upfront with beats, loops, and lyrics pressed together in a dense ball. Course, as with nearly all his B-list releases, there's a couple numbers here that make this worth a look for fanatics. Here, Keith at his most inspired is Keith at his horniest. "She Likes Your Sex" recalls the best bedroom R&B on Keith's extremely limited Personal Album while the very silly "Varoom" brings pervert reminders of his porno-core classic Sex Style. Other numbers to put in your single-track download cue are the amusing diss-fest "Iraqi Verse," which has absolutely nothing to do with Iraq, and "Keep on Jumpin," an infectious club track that could have been a single had KutMasta Kurt gotten a hold of it. The only other amusing idea on the album is titling the 14th song on the album "14th Song on the Album," but it begs the question as to how did Keith know this outtake would be the 14th song on an outtake album, whether or not these are genuine outtakes at all, and why would he burden his loyal following with yet another collection of mostly substandard tracks? ~ David Jeffries

| | Melvins Mangled Demos From 1983 Vinyl LP (2005)
No Control songs
$13.09 Much has been said about the Melvins' formative years -- they inspired Kurt Cobain to start a band, they single-handedly invented grunge by slowing down punk rock to a snail's crawl (etc., etc.). But as evidenced by the majority of the songs that comprise Mangled Demos from 1983, there was very little metal in their sound at this time, as they started as a noisy punk band. Granted, they were one heck of a noisy punk band, as evidenced by such speed-of-light thrashers as "If You Get Bored," "I'm Dry," and "The ...
