Sum' Mo Chikan music CDs
$13.49 Louisiana slide master Sonny Landreth takes his time between releases -- his last studio disc of original material was five years prior to this -- but when they arrive, the wait seems justified. For the debut album on his own Landfall records, Landreth calls in marquee name guitarists Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Robben Ford, Eric Johnson, and Vince Gill to bolster the visibility factor. Rather than focusing on guitar duals, Landreth wrote songs that incorporate their styles, and occasional vocals, organically into the material. There are plenty of stunning solos of course, but they are integrated into the tunes that stand up just fine without the six-string fireworks. The album's title is a double entendre as "reach" is a body of water and also describes Landreth inviting his guests to be part of the project. The water theme appears in a few post-Katrina songs like the scathing "Blue Tarp Blues ("Air Force One had a heck of a view, lookin' down on the patchwork of ...

Sum' Mo Chikan CD music
$12.69 Jimmy Strain is unique not only because he produces music as a one-man rock band, which is rare throughout the world, but because of his versatility. "Emotion Frequency" is the second proof of Jimmy's talent as a musician, poet and artist. Hard to believe, but it is true that Jimmy writes all the music and verses, plays the guitar and other instruments, sings all the numbers, and designs the jacket of his album, doing all the photos and calligraphy by himself. The calm and lyrical opening is followed by "Bird" that may remind the listeners of Judas Priest or Stratovarius."Now" akes its fans remember Metallica and wonder,"How can one person present this full, heavy metal sound?""Pieces of Me" may give the hint of the latest trend of Nu-metal, whereas the preceding works have the style of more traditional metal music. However, the lyrical yet highly technical guitar solo in the middle differentiates Jimmy from other Nu-metal musicians by presenting a wonderful example of his pursuit of melodic solo that has stories to tell. The next three songs have strong social messages. "Morning Bread for Us" is an anti-war song. "A Letter from an Aborted Baby"protests against abortion. "Camouflage" is perhaps the most offensive song with the widest spectrum in the whole album; it could not have been born without Jimmy's first-hand experience of conscription. Then come "Owl Girl" and "Hope" ...
