(4 Customer Reviews)
To the layperson, "complex and intelligent" may not be what comes to mind when someone mentions death metal, but then those people have probably never heard Scar Symmetry. Their third album, HOLOGRAPHIC UNIVERSE, manages to push both the heaviness and the melodic content of previous releases even further, showcasing smarter songwriting without sacrificing the crunch. By incorporating cookie monster vocals with more operatically sung techniques, Scar Symmetry has the best of both worlds. Epics such as the massive "Artificial Sun Projection" have more in common with Dream Theater than with Morbid Angel, but they still open up the throttle on a track like "The Missing Coordinates."

Holographic Universe Music Holographic Universe Music Holographic Universe Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) Seriously. An insanely talented group. I love the guitar riffs and vocals, every song on this album is a hit, and their lyrics are very meaningful and poetic. This is melodic death metal at its best people! And if you loved "Pitch Black Progress" from 2006, you will find that this band improved even more! Submitted by SwiftBlade8420 (NYC, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 2 found this helpful.
I Never new Melodic Death Meatal Could Be This Beautifull This album is jam packed with the most complex guitar rithems, leads and solos. I highley recomend this album. Submitted by conniemotter (Hudson, Oh) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 2 found this helpful.
Not their strongest effort but good Scar Symmetry is an extremely talented band and has thus far created some of the best Melodic Death albums this side of the millennium. Unfortunately, it seems SS has been sliding down the same slope many Melodic Death do as they progress, a slide toward the ever more melodic. Their first album's vocals and riffs were Death accented by Melodic. Their second was more or less an even split now with Holographic Universe the roles have switched to having the melodic the focus and death the accent. Again not that SS does't do both well, I just favor their original disposition. Submitted by metalmachine27 (California, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.
great album if you like the previous works from scar symmetry then you will also love this one.
Great musicianship, great riffs and choruses, and great vocals a little bit cleaner than the previous albums, but they also have kept the brutal ones.Overall a great effort! Submitted by damianosr (greece) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Holographic Universe
$13.15 Seasoned pros that they were when they got together, Scar Symmetry's career took all of a year's time from their inception to first album Symmetric in Design's 2005 release by no less than major metal players Nuclear Blast -- quite an endorsement of their talents. These might be described as reminiscent of Canadians Into Eternity, minus the strident vocals and with a greater emphasis on the death than the power metal elements of their sound, as the Swedes keep their songs brutal but clean, hyperactive but under control, elaborate but to the point. In short, fraught with contradictions, exactly as their name suggests. Frontman Christian Älvestam deserves much credit for these merits, with his estimable ability to deliver both clean tones and fearsome growls in equally powerful measures (most bands working in this milieu requiring two separate vocalists to pull off such a feat) -- but it's guitarists Jonas Kjellgren and Per Nilsson who really rule the roost here, their tag-team approach to rhythmic crunch and heroic solos dictating the tempo throughout, while simultaneously making way for some serious synthesizer ...
| | Scar Symmetry Pitch Black Progress CD (2006)
Holographic Universe
$12.99 After leading the charge of heavy metal's creative thrust throughout most of the 1990s (thanks to class acts like In Flames, At the Gates, and Dark Tranquility, to name but three), Scandinavian death metal began fading in strength as the 2000s approached, and eventually gave way to its heir apparent: melodic deathcore, as espoused by fast-rising bands like Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage, and Caliban. Some of the older genre's stalwarts still managed to hang on to their careers (albeit via diminished popularity and/or attempted reinventions like In Flames' idiotic flirtations with nu-metal), while other, more recent practitioners like Soilwork or Children of Bodom found continued fan favor by way of lighter, poppier material, but truly promising new faces were conspicuous by their inexistence. Into this relative void stepped Sweden's Scar Symmetry, whose impressive 2005 debut, Symmetric in Design, raised quite a few eyebrows, and whose frankly stunning 2006 follow-up, Pitch Black Progress, could very well help launch "the next" relevant phase of death metal's evolution. Impossible as it is to be sure about such things until years after the fact, ...

| | Maurice Coyle Vital Signs CD (2002)
Holographic Universe
$21.55 The recording studio was filled with an easy camaraderie, and the musicians were eager to begin. Mutual respect is the heart of all creative endeavors and this was evident in the actions and attitudes of the musicians and recording engineers. This was music as team sports - you rely on the efforts and skills of the individual players to deliver the finest performance.Maurice Coyle sipped a cup of coffee, and tossed ideas and laughter back and forth with Peggy Monaghan, the producer, and Charlie Hewitt, the engineer. Coyle was quick to offer ideas about the session, but just as eager to listen to them. In the booth, his voice was smooth as warm silk and filled with confidence and excitement. The session musicians were impressive. Two pianists played on the project, Tom Bargelski and Melissa Bledsoe Fischer. Bargelski was the epitome of taste and timing, and a master of open spaces, allowing Coyle's vocals to shine. Fischer played with cool, intricate improvisations punctuated by explosive chords. Dirk Westfall provided a sweeping bass line with a solid foundation of rhythm. The drums ...
