During the peak of the mid-1960s blues boom in England, a scruffy young group came roaring out of Ireland with a raw, scrappy blues-rock sound. Led by Van Morrison, Them could spit out blues tunes like "Bright Lights, Big City" with just as much grit as the Stones, but they also turned out their own garage-rock gems, like "Mystic Eyes" and future bar-band staple "Gloria," whose visceral-but-dreamy tinge foreshadowed Morrison's later solo career.

Dismissed by the benighted as the Doors' "pop album," SOFT PARADE is one of the band's most adventurous recordings, utilizing strings and horns without resorting to schlocky over-production and moving far beyond their blues roots. Morrison was fully into his shaman phase by 1969, and his obsession with that image is reflected in the proselytizing air of "Tell All the People," and of course "Shaman's Blues." The album's biggest hit "Touch Me," while easily the group's most radio-friendly offering, is a pop classic that ranks among the great '60s AM radio tunes. "Wild Child" is a brief return to the blues-rock of yore, but the title track is a sophisticated, extended piece that moves through several different moods and textures, full of the elliptical, poetic lyrics that were Morrison's trademark.

Majestic's sophomore CD suffers from no sophomore slump. The disc continues with the brightly layered sound they hinted at on their 1999 Shelflife Records debut, Live It Up!. Wake Up, Come out and Play starts off with singer Scott Schultz whisper-singing "wake up" over and over, and then the jangly guitar strum, drums, and horns kick in for the festive "Tumbling." The third track, "Come out and Play," serves as the almost-title track, mixing choppy organ and sweet-sounding vocals, creating a playful sound reminiscent of the best of twee pop.
