| | Dimmu Borgir Enthrone Darkness Triumphant Vinyl LP Record Dimmu Borgir Discography of CDs
Contains an untitled hidden track following " A Succubus In Rapture".
Norwegian black metal doesn't get much more sweepingly epic than Dimmu Borgir's third LP, 1997's ENTHRONE DARKNESS TRIUMPHANT. While many black metal acts are strait-jacketed by genre orthodoxy, Dimmu Borgir took the opportunity to spread their dark wings, even abandoning their native Norwegian to write and record the album in English. The sound is far removed from the humble scrappy early black metal of Venom and their ilk, as ENTHRONE DARKNESS TRIUMPHANT unfolds with all the weight and grandeur of finely composed classical music. That's not to say it isn't brutal; in fact, the sheer size and power of the music remains dizzying. "Tormentor of Christian Souls" is a veritable ice storm of scouring guitars and pounding drums, with monolithic keyboards adding to the thickening atmosphere, while the stately, funereal "A Succubus in Rapture" weaves a cobweb of fetid gloom.
One of the most important Scandinavian metal discs ever, Dimmu Borgir's Enthrone Darkness Triumphant is the group's unquestioned masterpiece. The success of the 1997 offering is probably due to two facts: the band's signing to metal powerhouse label Nuclear Blast and the decision to write their lyrics in English, the universal language of metal. Having Peter Tagtgren man the recording console wasn't a bad decision, either. The producer assisted Dim mu Borgir in creating the most crushing sound of their career. It's difficult to pick standout cuts from Enthrone Darkness Triumphant, as each song is as brutal and musical as the next. The intensity simply never lets up on this release. Fans of Dim mu Borgir and black metal in general are highly encouraged to obtain a copy of this seminal record at the earliest opportunity. [The Candlelight Limited Edition appeared in 2009.] ~ Jason Anderson
Recorded at Abyss Studios, Sweden in January 1997.

Enthrone Darkness Triumphant album
$10.39 Of the "big four" original thrash bands (the other three being Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth), Slayer was the least compromising and most consistent. As such, 2009's WORLD PAINTED BLOOD recalled more than the title of Slayer's 1986 masterpiece REIGN IN BLOOD; it shared the earlier album's ferocious aggression and trademark speed metal-meets-hardcore sound. Throughout, the sound is lean and mean, with bassist/vocalist Tom Araya's vocals mixed relatively dry and upfront, giving the album a bracing, fist-to-the-face force. Jackhammer tracks such as "Hate Worldwide" and "Psychopathy Red" are short, no muss-no fuss blasts of double kick drum, minor key-riffing fury, ...

Enthrone Darkness Triumphant CD music
$13.15 Dutch pomp-metal band Epica, fronted by classically trained mezzo-soprano Simone Simons, released their second album for Nuclear Blast only a year after their label debut, the more unique The Classical Conspiracy. That two-disc live set found them performing a mix of classical works and their own songs with backing by a full orchestra and choir. This album offers more of their bombastic goth metal songs, with Simons' vocals floating atop an ever flowing stream of complicated drumming, epic riffs, and shredtastic solos. The use of orchestral instruments to add John Williams-like climaxes is intermittently successful, but the music ...

Enthrone Darkness Triumphant album
$12.45 While Anvil never really got the chance to make a bid for mainstream success, and it's too late now -- they've got an affectionate documentary about themselves, the success of which has gotten them a deal to release this album, but the industry just doesn't make stars anymore, certainly not in metal. The best Anvil can hope for is that they'll be able to go out (or carry on for a few more years, if they choose to do so) with some self-respect. Luckily, THIS IS THIRTEEN is more than good enough to achieve that goal. The production by Chris Tsangarides, who worked with the band in the early '80s, showcases their still impressive instrumental skills, and while the lyrics range between functional and boneheaded, Steve "Lips" Kudlow's voice is powerful, reminiscent of Ian Gillan on the more midtempo material and Suicidal Tendencies' Mike Muir on the thrashier tracks. Most of the ...
| | Tool 10,000 Days CD (2006)
Enthrone Darkness Triumphant CD music
$11.75 To its legion of fans, everything the band Tool does is an event, but the elaborate plan behind their sporadic release schedule--roughly five years, on average, between albums--is due primarily to the time and effort the band packs into each successive effort. To title their fourth album 10,000 DAYS, then, isn't as much an exaggeration as it would seem. Tool are America's most consummate mainstream perfectionists, revitalizing progressive rock to the grandeur of its '70s heyday, but updated with technocratic tension and existential dread not known to previous generations. Perhaps it's the development of more musical genres at the turn of the millennium, but it's also Tool's ability to take what is needed from each and leave the florid excesses behind, forming a seething gray core of angst and release across epic-length songs that are as accessible as they are complex. The material on 10,000 DAYS provides typically ...

Enthrone Darkness Triumphant songs
$16.75 Ryan Adams's sophomore album with his Cardinals backing band, and his second studio offering of 2005, JACKSONVILLE CITY NIGHTS finds the ever-prolific singer/songwriter in his twangy, Gram Parsons-inspired persona. In fact, on "Dear John," jazz/pop superstar Norah Jones plays Emmylou Harris to Adams's Parsons, as the two settle into a slow, smoky duet.
While JACKSONVILLE has an energetic moment or two ("The Hardest Part"), it never wanders anywhere near Adams's amped-up ROCK N ROLL territory. In general, this is melancholy, down-tempo alt-country, which, given Adams's past in Whiskeytown, ...

Enthrone Darkness Triumphant album
$16.99 If for no other reason, the 81st instalment in the Greensleeves label's ongoing series of one-rhythm albums deserves a place in the history books for being, very likely, the first reggae album to have nothing but product placements for a title. But in fact, Redbull and Guinness is also noteworthy for the quality of the Delly Ranx rhythm after which the album is named: starting with the kind of intricate handclapping that you might normally hear in a flamenco bar or a Steve Reich composition, "Red Bull & Guinness" then slides into an interesting mix of spare offbeats and soft synthesizer chords. It's the kind of rhythm that singers and toasters from a variety of different schools will find equally inviting, and indeed this album features a fairly broad spectrum of musical treatments. The highlights are no surprise: Sizzla lays down a hard and blistering rap on "Nuh Business," while Turbulence gives one of his strongest singjay performances on "Treat Her Good," riding the rhythm expertly while bringing some melodic invention to the mix as well. There is also a very fine combination track from Mr. Vegas and ...

Enthrone Darkness Triumphant music CDs
$18.99 On its remarkably assured self-titled debut, the Scotland-based alternative act Glasvegas presents a set of songs that acknowledges both an early 1960s rock-&-roll vibe and a dreamy `90s shoegazer haze. Fronted by passionate singer James Allan, who belts out his lyrics in a thick Scottish brogue, the band shines brightest on the soaring, guitar-driven tunes "Geraldine" and "Daddy's Gone," often coming across as a compelling fusion of ...
