CSS: Carolina Parra, Luiza Sa, Lovefoxxx, Adriano Cintra. Personnel: Adriano Cintra (vocals, bass guitar, background vocals); Adriano Cintra (vocals, background vocals); Lovefoxxx (vocals); Luiza Sa, Luiza Sá (guitar, keyboards, cowbells); Carolina Parra, Carolina Parra (guitar, keyboards, background vocals); Ana Rezende Dos Anjos (guitar, keyboards). Audio Mixer: Mark "Spike" Stent. Recording information: Trama, Sao Paolo, Brazil. Photographers: Luiza Sá; Adriano Cintra. On its second studio album, 2008's DONKEY, the Brazilian dance/post-punk act CSS (Cansei de Ser Sexy) dials down its confrontational pop-art attitude ("Meeting Paris Hilton" from its self-titled Sub Pop debut), but keeps churning out beat-heavy tunes. A kinder CSS, perhaps, but not necessarily a gentler one, as best evinced on fierce tracks such as "Left Behind" and "How I Became Paranoid," where bold synth stabs are gamely met with searing guitar lines. Frontwoman Lovefoxxx and company do find time for a somewhat tender moment, on the light, cheekily titled "Beautiful Song," though even that tune can't help but descend into a Talking Heads-like rhythmic workout. After delivering an acclaimed debut, bands sometimes try to "improve" their follow-up with a more sophisticated approach that, all too often, ends up overpowering what was appealing about their music in the first place. Cansei de Ser Sexy's self-titled first album was a glorious D.I.Y. hash of chunky guitars, cheap synths, and Lovefoxxx's brashly sexy vocals, and its rawness just made it more bracing. The band's vivid sound seemed indelible, but its second album, Donkey, proves otherwise. CSS' guitarist Adriano Cintra produced this album as well as CSS, but Donkey sounds much more polished; though Mark "Spike" Stent mixed these songs, his work with artists like Björk suggests that this album's more generic sound isn't his fault. "Let's Reggae All Night"'s ultra-simple riffs, buzzing synths, and pidgin song title aim to recapture CSS' appeal, but fall flat in Donkey's cleaner surroundings; "Give Up" and the stream-of-consciousness party meditation "Jager Yoga" deliver the outlines of catchy songs, but don't fill them in with memorable hooks. Strangely, for a good chunk of Donkey, the band separates the messy mesh of guitars and keyboards that made CSS so much good dirty fun. Instead, they separate it into chugging songs reminiscent of late-'80s/early-'90s college rock that dominates the first half of the album, and sleekly synthetic pop that makes up most of Donkey's second half. Neither approach succeeds completely, although the excellent "Move" actually benefits from its polished surroundings, setting off its skipping beat with percolating synths and understated, Afro-pop-tinged guitars, while "Rat Is Dead (Rage)" fuses the Pixies' buzzsaw riffs and solos and sing-song melodies to a tale of domestic abuse and murderous revenge. The fact that a CSS song is about something besides sex, art or music -- or any combination of the three -- is another way that Donkey's sophistication is markedly different from the band's previous work, and not always for the better. "How I Became Paranoid" is just too wordy for its own good, suggesting that the band should stick to slogan-like lyrics like "music is my boyfriend." Lovefoxxx's lyrics seem more inspired by a living, breathing boyfriend than by music itself, whether she's proving how much she doesn't miss him on "Left Behind" (which boasts a verse melody uncannily similar to Nicolette Larson's "It's Gonna Take a Lot of Love"), or charming him into making her a sandwich on the quirkily romantic final track "Air Painter." She, and the rest of the band, sound so downright respectable on most of Donkey that it's sometimes hard to believe this album was made by the same people who cranked out sassy, sleazy rants against art bitches and Paris Hilton just one album before. Polished instead of rough, thoughtful instead of brash, Donkey isn't an outriRolling Stone (p.94) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Their second album is long on exuberance and short on pretension: 'Jager Yoga' banks on a catchy shout-along chorus and stabbing electro-riffs, and throughout, CSS liven up their art pop with guitar spills and gritty keyboards." Spin (p.112) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "DONKEY is a bluntly assertive, drunk-in-the-afternoon, neon-stretch-pants-on-inside-out party record for the un-self-serious set." Alternative Press (p.162) - 4.5 stars out of 5 -- "'Jager Yoga' is fired-up electro-rock windmill-kick and the synth-pop highlight 'Left Behind' manages to be both melancholy and a party jam." Mojo (Publisher) (p.103) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he glossy synth sounds of 'Move' are as '80s as a lace fingerless glove, while 'Give Up' updates 'Rock Lobster' for YouTube cred..." Blender (Magazine) (p.82) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "DONKEY is harder rocking and occasionally more earnest....Their ear for melody has developed..." Clash (magazine) (p.126) - "[C]ontaining just enough unabashed fun....'Reggae All Night' manages to groove along whilst never sounding remotely like anyone from Jamaica..." | | Kasai Allstars In The 7th Moon, The Chief Turned Into A Swimming Fish And Ate The Head Of His Enemy By Magic CD (2008) (Import) Digipak; Belgium
Donkey
$14.45 The third volume in Crammed Disc's excellent Congotronics series is as wild, sophisticated, and truly exotic as its predecessors (the title alone, In the 7th Moon, the Chief Turned Into a Swimming Fish and Ate the Head of His Enemy by Magic, should reflect this). The Kasai Allstars are based in Kinshasa and form a collective of about 25 musicians from five different bands from the region who all represent different ethnic groups. Over time immemorial, some of these intersecting groups have been in conflict with one another as each has its own culture and language. In other words, assembling this supergroup was no easy task, but musicians of all cultures tend to think differently than most people: the expansive spirit of adventure often trumps prejudice. These players include not only instrumentalists, but ten singers and dancers as well. Some of these bands -- Lusombe, Madimba Tandjolo, Dibua, Basokin, and Masanka Sankayi -- have appeared on the two previous Congotronics recordings on their own. The music on this volume is as surprising as it is different from the other Congotronics volumes. These musicians have to adapt instruments, scalar harmonics, singing styles, and even language in order to be able to work together. Add to this the uses of amplification and modern production. That said, they not only invent rhythms and melodies but also play their traditional styles with one another. The players use instruments familiar to all Kasai cultures like the likembe (thumb piano), lokombe, xylophone, and the tandojo as well as the electric guitar (which acted as a substitute for the more traditional lusese tetrachord). The results of this fusion can especially ...
