San Francisco’s Conspiracy of Beards is 30-man choir that performs gritty, original arrangements of the songs of Leonard Cohen. This a-capella group has had a string of acclaimed performances at Bay Area venues, including the Cafe du Nord, the Great American Music Hall, and The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The choir has also been featured on National Public Radio’s “West Coast Live,” on KFOG-FM, and on PBS television station KQED-TV.Transforming Cohen’s simple melodies into complex 4- and 5-part harmonies, the group achieves a sound that is both robust and tender. One can hear influences of indie rock, jazz, gospel, barbershop, classical and even doo-wop in the unique arrangements the choir selects. Using the genius of Cohen’s words, the Beards inspire their audience members to ponder romance, politics, sex, longing and spirituality, all amid laughter and cheers. Conspiracy Of Beards album
$9.55 Susan Boyle's grand unveiling on Britain's Got Talent was with a song from Les Miserables - the very song that lends this album its title -- and if she could become an international sensation based on a show tune standard, there's no reason for her to change her approach on her debut, since that's the sound that made her a star. Plus, a large part of Boyle's appeal is that she's a middle-aged woman recalling a bygone era when there were singers that appealed to an adult audience by offering soft, stately versions of pop hits and standards. That time was the late `60s and early `70s, and apart from a rather faithful version of Madonna's "You'll See," I Dreamed ...

| | Kimberly Peterson Growing Up CD (2008)
Conspiracy Of Beards songs
$8.55 "Thank you, New York, for building calluses I'll never lose." Kimberly Peterson's cross-country, post-college move from Los Angeles to New York has shaped her first demo, "Growing Up". Although Kim had been in many new and uncomfortable cultural situations since birth (Kim's parents had a penchant for traveling to the outskirts of foreign countries without knowing the language or the cultural norms), settling into New York City was a shock. After finding the subway and finding an apartment in Red Hook, Brooklyn, Kim started the much harder battle of finding herself in this new, adult role.Kim got her musical ear from her grandmother, a concert pianist, who used to sit Kim and her brother Kent on the piano bench whenever they visited her in Neosho, Missouri. After passing pitch tests as babies, (her grandmother would say, "sing like Granny!," and was thrilled when her grandkids sang in the same key), and later singing duets from Camelot to her grandma's accompaniment, Kim knew that her heart was in her voice. Although Kim adored being musical, her teenage years brought her to an uncanny fear of solo performance. She found numerous ways to weasel out of competitions, but finally agreed to perform in the Kiwanis club finals at her middle school. In ...

Joining her on this new recording is electric guitarist Victor Herrero and drummer Alex Nielson. Bo' Weavil.
Josephine Foster's follow-up to the delightfully antiquated A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing comes back to the kind of folk she established on Hazel Eyes, I Will Lead You. and to the English language. ...
