| | Bad Religion New Maps Of Hell CD Bad Religion Discography of CDs
This release has been hailed as the band's best album in years, 'rocking with both metallic fury and blistering punk energy, but with enough melodic hooks and chorus harmonies to engage the faint of heart' - Revolver. This deluxe package features seven new acoustic songs, including three never before heard tracks, a full 23-song live DVD from House Of Blues Las Vegas, foldout posters, and an expanded 20-page lyric book. The Bad Religion catalog has scanned over 3 million RTD and the band is constantly being rediscovered by a new generation of fans, most recently through their extensive appearances in games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band.
Ever since they burst out of the early 1980s SoCal hardcore scene, Bad Religion has always been the smartest punk band on the block. Some 25 years down the line, the men who punk rock to grad school (literally--singer Greg Graffin has a Ph.D.) are as unrelenting as ever. In a post-9/11 America, there's more need than ever for Bad Religion, as the churning riffs and turbulent rhythms of NEW MAPS OF HELL propel polysyllabic, brainy lyrics that capture the tenor of the times. Sometimes directly addressing the turmoil of a war-torn world, sometimes evoking a more existential dilemma, Graffin, founding guitarist/co-writer Brett Gurewitz, and the rest of the sonic marauders march with righteous fury into the fray of humanity's follies, rocking intensely all the while.
Bad Religion: Greg Graffin (vocals); Greg Hetson, Brett Gurewitz, Brian Baker (guitar); Jay Bentley (bass instrument); Brooks Wackerman (drums).
Spin (p.98) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "The songs are more frantic and noisy than the band's recent work....The targets haven't changed much, and Bad Religion still hit them hard." Kerrang (Magazine) (pp.46-47) - "The songs here are sharp and the production is state of the art, harnessing the energies of a group that still plays as if it's living its last hour on earth." New Maps Of Hell album
$11.65 EVERCLEAR, AMC's finest hour and one the '90s' most powerful albums, is simultaneously lush and searing, heartache and despair borne out in elegant arrangements that combine fragile prettiness and soul-baring howls of pain. Multi-instrumentalist Bruce Kaphan rose to the occasion of his production debut. The canyons of reverb on the instruments are strangely appropriate, highlighting the almost decadent, tragically beautiful feel of the songs. Keyboards, pedal steel, and acoustic guitars drift like abandoned ships swirling around in a colorfully tempestuous sea full of unknown nautical demons. Guitarist Vudi contributes some of the most artful, non-traditional sounds ever concocted by a "rock" axeman.
The album begins with a slow, soulful lament to a love who's either sleeping or dead, before taking up the subject of mortality more fully in the anthemic "Rise," written by Eitzel for an AIDS-stricken friend. Eitzel observes the trials of those around ...

New Maps Of Hell album
$15.25 Truth be told, the Trembling Blue Stars routine was getting kind of stale by the release of Seven Autumn Flowers in 2004. With that album they crossed the line that divides reliable and predictable; no longer did the morose lyrics, melancholy vocals, minor chords and cheesy synths make a positive impression. Luckily for fans of the band, The Last Holy Writer is a comeback of sorts, certainly an improvement, and maybe even one of their finest records. How did they do it? It's hard to say because on the surface it seems like not much has changed sound or mood-wise. There's still a preponderance of downbeat lyrics and Bob Wratten hasn't suddenly traded in his mope for a smile, no fear of that anytime soon. The building blocks of their sound are mostly the same too. What makes a difference here is a boost in the overall energy level from unrelenting gloom to mostly sad, a slightly expanded sonic palette that makes room for field recordings and a wider range of drum sounds, and most importantly, some really good songs. Chief among them are the Beth Arzy-sung "Idyllwild" ...
