Merciless album
$13.85 At first glance, a Finnish heavy metal band named Wintersun, whose album cover shows a fallen warrior lying face down in the snow, might elicit thoughts of simplistic black metal infused with pagan or anti-Christian messages, but it doesn't take long for this eponymous debut to prove that first impressions can be deceiving. In fact, the new project of former Ensiferum and Arthemesia vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Jari Mäenpäa merges the hyper-fast precision of Yngwie Malmsteen-like guitar playing (witness the speedy "Beyond the Dark Sun") with the melodic sensibilities of post-Helloween power metal (see the more diverse "Winter Madness") and a homegrown passion for folk-styled songwriting descended straight from trailblazing compatriots Amorphis. If there is any sign of black metal songwriting to be found here, it's in the majestic symphonic backdrops draped all over the ever more ambitious offerings that follow: "Sleeping Stars" flirts with doom via its slow-creeping riffs, "Death and the Healing" alternates clean and rough vocals with a jaw-dropping display of pyrotechnic guitar heroics, and "Beautiful Death" comprises a stunning (if quite morbid) black metal tour de force in terms of both words and musical attack. Curiously, each subsequent track ...

Merciless music CDs
$20.75 Digitally remastered by Dave Glasser (Airshow Inc., Springfield, Virginia).
Despite Jim Eanes' identification with bluegrass, much of his music sounds like straight country performed on bluegrass instruments. As late as the early '60s, he was bucking trends by recording with acoustic instruments (including a banjo) but no drums and making constant use of the percussive "chop" rhythm. Eanes' midrange voice had none of the "high lonesome" character associated with bluegrass, and his willingness to experiment resulted in tracks like "Louise," a studio demo that Eanes wrote as a rock & roll song. That demo and 34 other studio recordings are included on this two-disc collection of Eanes' complete Starday sessions, considered by many fans to be Eanes' finest work. "Celebration," with its echoey shout-along chorus, hints ...

$16.45 About MidnightMIDNIGHT was a band that was formed in Great Neck, Long Island, NY in 1969. I was seeking new personnel for this new band, now called MIDNIGHT and auditioned many Great Neck people before settling into the final group: Myself (Michael Bitterman) on piano and acoustic guitar, Mitch Weissman on lead guitar and vocal, Ferdi Serim on drums and flute, Phil Mandel on a souped up Hammond C3 he called the 'Horace', and Andy Esposito on Bass. I wrote all the songs and we cut several demos at Ultra Sonic Studio in Hempstead, NY. We got air play on WLIR-a premier FM Long Island station and got very good response and we were chosen to play a rally at CW POST for Steve Post who was being kicked off the radio. We shared the bill with David Peel and the Lower East Side and Post's lawyer, William Kunstler. We managed to catch the attention of John Hammond-major producer at Columbia (who signed ...
