Bells The Bells album
$9.99 Black Eyed Peas, the hip-hop crossover juggernaut that propelled singer Fergie and producer Will.I.Am to superstardom, have, since 2003's ELEPHUNK, been audaciously plugging away at their bombastic but lighthearted style of rap-cum-dance pop--an ...

| | Radian Chimeric CD (2009)
Bells The Bells songs
$12.78 Austrian synth-bass-drums trio Radian has been making austere, arty post-rock (remember when that was a thing?) music since the late '90s. But unlike Tortoise or other, related acts, Radian has never seemed particularly interested in human concepts of beauty. In a way, their stark instrumental tracks recall Autechre more than any ordinary band -- alienation is as much a goal as a consequence of their steadily pulsing, jagged music. This new album, their first in five years, begins with the quite noisy, ugly "Git Cut Noise," which combines their usual thick bass and clicking drums with almost Einstürzende Neubauten-esque rattles, roars, and grinding sounds. This piece is revisited on "Git Cut Derivat," where it's reduced to quiet hums and ticking noises, almost perversely subtracting the very elements that seemed to define it in its first version. In between is the ten-minute "Feedbackmikro/City Lights," ...
| | Tangerine Dream Rubycon CD (1975)
Bells The Bells album
$8.85 RUBYCON is an undisputed classic in the vast Tangerine Dream canon, referenced by many of the new electronica generation. But at the time of its creation, Edgar Froese, Chris Franke, and Peter Baumann were themselves young men experimenting with technology.
RUBYCON is split into two sections, both of which offer the band's trademark mix of ululating sequencers, ghostly synthetic twilight, and mysterious electronic effects. Part One begins with intergalactic whispers, before coalescing into one of the Dream's most uniquely designed rhythm patterns. Part Two moves the ...

Bells The Bells CD music
$5.95 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by DJ Grandmaster Flash.
This is not a collection of classic Grandmaster Flash 12-inch jams from back in the day (try the essential MESSAGE FROM BEAT STREET for that) but Grandmaster Flash's own live mix of 16 classic dance tracks from the 1970s and '80s, combined on the master's ...

| | Mighty Super Funk: Rare 45S And Undiscovered Masters 1967-1987 CD (2008)
Bells The Bells CD music
$14.75 The sixth volume of Ace's long-running SuperFunk series is a pretty typical one: 20 pretty high-class rarities from funk's golden age, seven of them previously unissued, and none of them from famous performers. Perhaps the label needs to dig even deeper than usual as time goes on, getting into the vaults not only of unreleased material, but also sources (such as companies specializing in Latin music) that researchers might not necessarily assume hold some pure funk. While the results couldn't be said to be on par with the best funk of the era, they're pretty good (if occasionally generic), and considerably above the quality of what you'll find in the average rarity compilations assembled for some other genres of the era, like '60s garage rock and Northern soul. Some of the better outings here include the exuberant disc-opener by the Love Experience, "Are You Together for the New Day?"; the Philips Brothers' outrageous courtroom scenario "Who Stole My Cookie"; Mr. Jamo's "Shake What You Brought with You," elevated by electric sitar; Elroy Peace's "New Day," which is laced with some really weird wobbly wordless vocal sounds; and James Carpenter's lewd "Party Time." True, ...
