Reggae People Rising
$13.05 It's a minor problem, but if there's a complaint to be made about Tarrus Riley's 2009 effort CONTAGIOUS, it's that his previous effort, PARABLES, has a much better layout. The crowding together of redundant numbers and the uneven flow experienced here make CONTAGIOUS feel more like a collection of songs than a fully thought-out album, but they are great songs for the most part, performed in that dignified, warm, rasta manner that has made Riley a favorite of the new roots set. "Living the Life of a Gun" is a wonderfully smooth alternative to Anthony B. or Sizzla's social commentary, and when a children's choir enhances the moving prayer "Let Peace Reign," Riley skillfully moves into Wyclef's territory with elaborate arrangements hung on grand statements. The lovers numbers are just as good, if not better, this time out with a sensual take on Michael Jackson's hit "Human Nature" and the yearning "Love's Contagious"--based on Marley's "Coming in from the Cold" riddim--competing for the top spot. PARABLES remains a better introduction, but taken on a track-by-track level, Riley delivers his high-grade material with such grace and passion that CONTAGIOUS is well worth the bit of patience it requires.

| | B-Tribe Sensual Sensual CD (1998)
Reggae People Rising
$9.29 Principally recorded at Ocean Groove Studios, Miami Beach, Florida and Mediterranneo Studios, San Jose, Ibiza from 1996-1997.
The third album from the Barcelona Tribe of Soulsters (German producer Claus Zundel, or "The Brave") leaves its predecessors' predilection for German techno beats and English vocals far behind. Instead, the emphasis distinctly moves from the dance club to the bedroom, aided by Paco Fernandez's flamenco guitar. "Alegria" benefits from a slow, captivatingly steady beat that gently and unceasingly propels Fernandez's impassioned arpeggios and Arrantza Aida's wailing vocals. The title track marches steadily in the manner of Ravel's "Bolero" towards a climax just over the hill, and is in no particular hurry to get there (what lover would have it any other way?). "Tribute to J.S. Bach" expertly ...
| | Groundation Here I Am CD (2009)
Reggae People Rising
$13.85 Northern California's Groundation has many of the accoutrements of the typical reggae group: syncopated rhythms and horn charts, which hark back to ska, and the lead vocals of lyricist/guitarist Harrison Stafford, whose nasally, reedy tenor is reminiscent of Bob Marley's. But lurking within Groundation's music is a wholly different impetus that distinguishes it from standard-issue reggae. At the start of "Run the Plan," the opening track on the group's sixth album, HERE I AM, the musicians launch into what sounds like '70s jazz-rock fusion. It's only after a while that this abruptly stops and the band obediently lopes into a reggae beat behind Stafford's singing. But that ...

Reggae People Rising
$13.89 Originally from New Hampshire, singer/songwriter Matt Hannon has just released his first full-length album entitled "Roar." Filled with Matt's trademark jangly hooks and in your face vocals, the anthemic songs from his new disc can't help but make the listener rock out. After playing in various college bands while attending Indiana University in the mid-nineties, Matt moved to Los Angeles to further pursue music. He began focusing on a career as a solo artist, crafting his own songs and playing in historic rock venues throughout the city such as the Roxy, the Joint, and the Gig.He then landed a demo for one of his songs ("International Love Machine") in the feature film "Longshot", starring Paul Sorvino and Britney Spears. Matt's tune kicked off the opening scene of the movie, as one of the characters watches TV while waiting to meet up with 3 of his friends.Once work on his home studio was completed, Matt then started work on what would ultimately become "Sonic Love." He enlisted the blazing guitar work of close friend Chris Moseman (of the bands Push Me and Lint), as well ...
