La Paloma (One Song For All Worlds) CD (1995)
Ain't That a Shame and 11 Others/Let's Hang On and More Great New Hits buy CD music People thought Rhino Records was crazy to issue two volumes of the song "Louie, Louie" done by all manner of weird bands. That was nothing. Trikont, the acid-dazed German label whose sole mission in life -- and sometimes near death -- is to make available the weird, the wonderful, the forgotten, and the never weres, has gone overboard: they have issued four CDs of bands from all over world and from different decades over the 20th century playing the old standby "La Paloma." Look, if it doesn't strike a chord with you, it would if you heard it. Cool Cuban ballad that it looks like almost everybody covered. But four volumes? Over 100 takes? One Song? Yep, crazy as hell. Now to the music; the first version is by the Strangers in 1965 -- yes, Merle Haggard's band -- and it's followed by a gorgeous guitar combo led by Raymond Kane from 1988 and on to the Comedian Harmonists from 1939, and a Hawaiian group from 1929 before Hans Albers takes it on near the end of WWII in 1944. Nobody you've heard of yet? How about Carla Bley doing two variations: one called "Sad Paloma," and the other called "Whistling Paloma." How about Amon Düül II's "La Krautoma"? Surely you've heard that. Perhaps the Edison Concert Band from 1910 or Flaco Jimenez and the Rockin' Tex-Mex Band from 1986 will strike a memory chord. If not, there is always an amazing version by Charlie Parker recorded late in his career in 1952. There's even a stompin' version by Jelly Roll Morton recorded in 1938. There are 26 tracks in all, so I haven't mentioned half of them yet. The point is this: No two are alike. More often than not, you can barely recognize the original -- take for instance the earliest recording here, from 1899 by the Garde Republicane. What does it mean besides that Trikont is crazy? It means that that one song has so confused and haunted civilization for over 100 years that its relentlessly lonely and melancholy melody crosses not only cultural but class, political, and social barriers as well. That alone makes it worth the effort. And yes, of course, it makes for compelling listening with or without that mindset. ~ Thom Jurek

Medication Chemistry Freak CD (2008)
Ain't That a Shame and 11 Others/Let's Hang On and More Great New Hits CD music From the musical city of Seattle, home of the greats, such as Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam, comes The Medication; an Alternative-Punk band that is much more than an over-produced piece of trash. The Medication was born in drummer Nick Del Degan's garage in the summer of '05 where he was joined by rhythm guitarist and vocalist Clay Schneider. Later to follow were the much needed bass lines of Tyler Heathman and the melodic guitar riffs of Michael Morris. The Medication is all about good music and listening to it (that's why our CD is priced at $3.
99!). Their latest CD Chemistry Freak is a mixture of ballads that are so powerful they send shivers down your spine and upbeat tunes that make you just want to get up and dance.
Knowing full well that lyrics without meaning are nothing more than words lead singer Clay Schneider demonstrates use of lyrics, rhyme, and melodic harmony to create emotional vocals while providing rhythm guitar. Nick's hard hitting drums create a wave of pure force that you can feel throughout your body as his vicious, yet creative and controlled, beats add to the first half of the rhythm section. Unlike most drummers though, Nick is excellent at not only rhythm but melody as well supplying backing vocals and piano. To aid Nick in his quest for groove, Tyler Heathman provides bass lines that mix high fret playing and deep warm lows to develop a signature playing style that is like no other. Still, the puzzle is still not complete, needing the last piece who is Michael Morris. His lead guitar riffs mesh perfectly with the rest of the band to make melodic licks that are sweet but with enough edge to have the ultimate blend of tone.
November 2008 Nick left the band to persue other personal activities. After a long search for a drummer, Kenneth Perrault joined the band in January of 2009. The Medication has is scheduled to release their newest record, "Gunshots and Memories", at the end of summer 2009.

Cave Singers Welcome Joy CD (2009)
Ain't That a Shame and 11 Others/Let's Hang On and More Great New Hits songs With a warmer style than the name Cave Singers might suggest, WELCOME JOY is a simple and easygoing indie folk romp that picks up right where the trio's debut, INVITATION SONGS, left off. WELCOME JOY was recorded again with Black Mountain's Colin Stewart in Vancouver, and his pals Amber Webber (of Black Mountain and Lightning Dust) and Ashley Webber (also of Lightning Dust) assisted Derek Fudesco, Marty Lund, and Pete Quirk on the record. It's an Americana-rooted soundtrack for the change of the seasons, with two-chord structures and organic, free-spirited instrumentation. John Prine and Jeff Tweedy are touchstones here, but the most overt influence is Fleetwood Mac. Not only do the songs resemble the melodies found on RUMORS, but coincidentally, Quirk's voice sounds a lot like a cross between Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. "I Don't Mind" is a carefree jamboree, with kick drum, tambourine, and harmonica laying the foundation for a fingerpicked electric guitar. Meanwhile, "VV" is a pleasant backwoods birdwatching ditty, and "Leap" propels from a stripped-down guitar and vocal line into a full-fledged rollicking romp. A few songs take a tougher turn - "At the Cut" incorporates some gritty distortion and "Shrine" is a dark, brooding bongo number, where Quirk's weathered voice shines, but the Cave Singers' best moments are when they tone back the brooding and stick to carefree major-chord jams. Most of the album stays true to a light flavor, and WELCOME JOY is a nice, comfortable listen.
Personnel: Peter Quirk (vocals, guitar); Ashley Webber, Amber Webber (vocals); Marty Lund (guitar, drums); Derek Fudesco (guitar).

Glyder Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow CD (2010)
Ain't That a Shame and 11 Others/Let's Hang On and More Great New Hits CD music It's hard to find a Glyder review that doesn't mention Thin Lizzy at some point, which is to be expected because: (1) Thin Lizzy are, in fact, a major influence on Glyder, and (2) Glyder are an Irish band. Thin Lizzy were among the top Irish rock bands of the '70s (back in Ireland's pre-U2, pre-Pogues era), and anyone who owns a copy of 1976's Jailbreak or 1977's Bad Reputation can't miss the strong Thin Lizzy influence in Glyder's work. But as Glyder's third full-length album, Yesterday Today and Tomorrow, demonstrates, it's a mistake to think of Glyder as simply a Thin Lizzy tribute band. Actually, part of what makes this 2010 release interesting is the way that Glyder successfully draw on different eras for inspiration; their sound is a mixture of classic rock and alternative rock. Yesterday Today and Tomorrow is quite mindful of the hard rock and arena rock of the '70s, but it doesn't set out to be a carbon copy of that era; there are elements of post-grunge and post-`80s Brit-pop in the material as well as occasional hints of U2 (a comparison that may come too easily given the Irish connection, although it's a valid comparison nonetheless). The classic rock influences jump out at you -- influences that include Paul McCartney & Wings, Golden Earring, Pink Floyd (although Glyder rock a lot harder), Rory Gallagher, Deep Purple, and, of course, Thin Lizzy -- and yet, it's hard to believe that a fan of, say, the Foo Fighters, wouldn't find some post-`80s value on this album. That said, Yesterday Today and Tomorrow doesn't pretend to reinvent the wheel, but it's a rewarding example of how a band can obsess over the '70s without being totally oblivious to the '90s and 2000s. ~ Alex Henderson
Third album from the Irish hard rock outfit features a guest appearance from Dave Menketti from Y&T on guitar. Includes the 3 bonus tracks 'Time To Fly', 'All You've Done', and 'Elverstown' (instrumental). 13 tracks
