On The Other Hand, Death review
$13.59 HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY begs any number of referential mash-ups to be used as description of its outlandish tonal and stylistic qualities. It's a little like a romantic and sophisticated live-action Ninja Turtles movie imbued with a cracked version of H.P. Lovecraft's monster storytelling. It's a feature-length version of STAR WARS's Mos Eisley Cantina mixed with a scrappy, proficient passion for creature design reminiscent of Ray Harryhausen. It's also kind of director/co-writer Guillermo del Toro's HELLBOY (2004) wrapped in a blanket of his PAN'S LABYRINTH. This sequel is all these things, but none of them can accurately capture the singularity of a movie which, in some ways, stands alone in its ability to capture the crass and literary luridness of reading a comic book. It's filled with gross creatures ...

On The Other Hand, Death movie DVD
Fans of Hong Kong cinema have long known that directors Johnny To and Ka-Fai Wai, whose collaborations include HELP! (2000), LOVE ON A DIET (2001), and MY LEFT EYE SEES GHOSTS (2002), can be counted on to deliver unadulterated thrills and unusual kicks. MAD DETECTIVE sees them teaming up once again to create an unhinged police procedural with an endearingly offbeat performance at its center from Lau Wing Chan. Inspector Bun is renowned on the force for his crime-solving skills, catching killers with a combination of near-psychic ability and clever re-enactment. As the film opens we see him repeatedly stabbing a pig carcass and begging rookie Ho (Andy On) to zip him in a suitcase and push him down the stairs--then he solves the case in a "Eureka!" moment. Too intense for his own well-being, though, he soon cracks and is released from the force when he cuts off his own ear and presents it to his captain as a retirement gift. Years later, Ho tracks Bun down to ask for his help ...

Bollywood director Kunal Kohli (FANAA) draws on crowd-pleasing special effects, ingratiating actors, and more than a passing familiarity with MARY POPPINS to create this engaging family film. In THODA PYAAR THODA, God (Rishi Kapoor) sends a lively, no-nonsense angel named Geeta (Rani Mukherji) to serve as nanny to four orphaned siblings living in the household of industrialist Ranbeer Tarwal (Saif Ali Khan). Ranbeer has everything--a mansion on a lake, a well-tailored wardrobe, a fashionista girlfriend (Ameesha)--but not until after the arrival of the children does he recognize the emptiness of it all. The orphans, on the other hand, are painfully aware of the hole at the center of their lives. And while Geeta can easily see what the humans need to feel complete, she also wonders what it might be like to cry.
Even in the face of individual unhappiness and family tragedy, Kohli keeps the proceedings light and sweet. Imaginative songs from Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy (DIL CHAHTA ...

$10.35 Veteran character actor Brian Cox (BRAVEHEART, RUSHMORE) proves a magnetic leading man in the role of Avery Ludlow, a small-town war veteran on a mission of vengeance in RED, based on the 1995 novel by Jack Ketchum. Trugve Allister Diesen and Lucky McKee's film is a moving character study that plays like a vigilante thriller, a portrait of the lengths that a decent man will go to when the only thing he loves has been taken from him. A strong cast and authentic small-town locations bring this unassuming but memorable film to life. On a sleepy afternoon while fishing with his 14 year-old dog, Red, Avery Ludlow is approached by a trio of teenage boys. The conversation begins benignly enough, but when the rifle-toting boys ask for money and Avery is unable to comply, they shoot and kill Red. Grieving for the loss of his friend, a gift for his 50th birthday from his late wife, Avery tracks down the shooter's name via the store where the rifle was purchased and pays a visit to the boy's father, wealthy redneck businessman Michael McCormack (Tom Sizemore). The boy, Danny (Noel Fisher), denies shooting the dog, which sets Avery on a path of vengeance, utilizing everything from the aid of a local TV news woman (Kim Dickens) to methods more conventionally brutal.
Reportedly a troubled production which saw director Diesen taking over for ...

On The Other Hand, Death review
$16.29 For some, the state of America's finances holds about as much interest as watching brainiacs labor over the New York Times crossword puzzle, but that's why WORDPLAY director Patrick Creadon was the perfect person to helm this documentary. Alternately entertaining, informative, and disheartening, I.O.U.S.A. is a timely and essential film that explores the U.S. fiscal crisis, focusing primarily on the country's high level of international debt. But this nonpartisan documentary doesn't merely blame the Bush administration; I.O.U.S.A. chronicles America's financial history, starting with the 18th century and discussing the country's trend of living beyond its means, both in wartime and in peace.
For those who had trouble with high school economics, I.O.U.S.A. pleads its case with more charts and graphs than the S.A.T.s. But the documentary avoids an overload of graphics and numbers, focusing ...
