| | Michael Lington Vivid CD Michael Lington Discography of CDs
Originally issued in 2000, VIVID continues Michael Lington's creative forays into smooth jazz. Along with his sumptuously mellow, chilled-funk approach, Lington goes a little exotic here as well, working some sultry Brazilian rhythms into the mix. His sax can be alternately Kenny G sweet and Warren Hill boisterous, and there's also a nice mix of vocals and instrumentals throughout. Fans of Hill as well as Dave Koz, David Sanborn, and Gerald Albright will find lots to savor here.

$16.59 The blueprint for Ultra Chilled, Vol. 2 is the same as the solid first edition in Ultra's downbeat series -- which rose above the heap of substandard, commercialized chill-out compilations -- with compilers balancing a few downtempo tracks by a varying cast of vocal artists (Coldplay, the Specials, Black Box Recorder, Nelly Furtado, Bebel Gilberto, Radiohead) with electronica specialists (here, usual suspects like Boards of Canada, Groove Armada, Thievery Corporation, Tosca, Fila Brazillia, and Röyksopp). ...

Vivid album
$19.79 Absentee cut way back on the country-rock on their second album, Victory Shorts. What they don't scale back is the mordant wit of singer Dan Michaelson's lyrics, the band's raucous approach, the size and strength of the hooks, and -- best of all -- Michaelson's amazing voice. He has one of the deeper voices you're likely to hear outside of doo wop or opera; he sounds sort of like a steadier Johnny Cash or a way steadier Calvin Johnson. Mostly, though, he just sounds pretty great as he staggers through the ballads like a heartsick, slightly drunken fool and romps through the rockers with an amazingly light touch. Hearing him navigate the humorously choppy waters ...

$9.25 "Prelude To A Kiss" won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo. ELEGY IN BLUE was nominated for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance By An Individual Or Group and the title song was nominated for Best Instrumental Composition.
Impeccably recorded, gorgeously conceived and executed, this is the kind of jazz album they don't make any more. Except that Benny Carter has been making them for over 60 years, as one of the preeminent big band arrangers and alto saxophone stylists in the history of jazz. Reflecting as it does the urbane charm and commanding musicianship of Benny Carter, perhaps this Grammy-nominated recording should have been dubbed ELEGANCE IN BLUE.
ELEGY IN BLUE is comprised of reminisces for fallen comrades, but there is nothing but celebration and joy in this superb band's reflections, and they transcend narrow stylistic categories. ...
