Originally issued in 2000, VIVID continues Michael Lington's creative forays into smooth jazz. Along with his sumptuously mellow, chilled-funk approach, Lington goes a little exotic here as well, working some sultry Brazilian rhythms into the mix. His sax can be alternately Kenny G sweet and Warren Hill boisterous, and there's also a nice mix of vocals and instrumentals throughout. Fans of Hill as well as Dave Koz, David Sanborn, and Gerald Albright will find lots to savor here.

What they don't scale back is the mordant wit of singer Dan Michaelson's lyrics, the band's raucous approach, the size and strength of the hooks, and -- best of all -- Michaelson's amazing voice.
