Souvenirs - Ewazen, Telemann, J. Bach, Etc / Bonnell, Bottazzini, Green
$9.95 What would happen if members of Savatage decided to write some Christmas songs? Easy: Trans-Siberian Orchestra. This "supergroup" is the brainchild of Jon Oliva and Paul O'Neill (respectively the leader-keyboardist and the producer of Savatage). They hired Al Pitrelli (Asia, Savatage) to play guitars, Robert Kinkel to help with keyboards, John Middleton (also a member of Savatage) on bass, and Jeff Plate on drums. Lead vocals are shared by six vocalists, while some of the backing vocals are handled by Savatage lead singer Zachary Stevens. Christmas Eve and Other Stories is a concept album: all the songs are built as chapters of a book, each telling part of a larger story. The plot here is of a young angel sent down to Earth to find and bring back to the Lord "the one thing that best represents everything good that has been done in the name of this day." The angel's quest takes him all over the world, through Russia and Sarajevo, until he finally hears the prayer of a father. This last piece is the strongest moment on the album and makes for a miniature story within the larger story. It is basically told in a trilogy of songs: in the first, "Ornament," we hear the father's ...

| | The Best Of Andrea Bocelli: Vivere CD (2007)
Souvenirs - Ewazen, Telemann, J. Bach, Etc / Bonnell, Bottazzini, Green
$10.49 Issued in 2007, this Andrea Bocelli collection presents many of the Italian classical/pop-crossover artist's most memorable vocal performances. Highlights of the compilation include "Sogno" and "Because We Believe," tracks that fully reveal Bocelli's emotive and resonant voice, as well as duets with Celine Dion ("The Prayer," a delicate ballad) and Sarah Brightman (the wistful "Time to Say Goodbye"). While VIVERE may be a bit too concise for diehard Bocelli fans, it serves as a perfect introduction to the beloved singer.
Classical crossover mainstay Andrea Bocelli's first greatest-hits collection to date, released nearly a decade-and-a-half after he made his album debut in 1994, The Best of Andrea Bocelli: Vivere includes many of his best-known songs plus five new recordings exclusive to this compilation. ...

$14.79 I first met Marcello Angelini (artistic director, Tulsa Ballet Co.) in November of 2007 while touring the Ballet's facilities. Kivisto Hall was little more than a dirt lot at this point. Marcello and I got to chatting about various things related to music and it came up that I worked in Los Angeles as a film composer. I could have sworn I'd seen a lightbulb flash above his head. Before I knew it, we were collaborating on a new commission for the Ballet's Creation Series and I was being introduced to choreographer Ma Cong. Ma and I worked tremendously well together. He is a rhythmic choreographer and I am a rhythmically oriented composer, so the ideas began flowing almost immediately about how to approach the music. One challenge we encountered was the length of the piece. In this short form of ballet, there is really not enough time to introduce any kind of comprehensible story. Consequently, we decided to present the music and dance in a freer, more abstract way akin to the difference between a symphony and a tone poem. I was thrilled to learn the theme for the ballet would be Mediterranean. I come from very strong Greek roots so naturally I jumped at the chance to flavor the music that way. I wanted to give the music as much Greek flair as I could while still maintaining a Western sensibility. Greek scales and rhythms are so potent and distinct it would be easy to overdo, so I adopted an air of subtlety rather than slapping the audience in the face with an excess of over-stylized music. The instrumentation is traditionally western in nature; woodwinds, French horns, percussion, harp and strings. I decided an effective way to introduce the Greek character was to employ the sound of mandolin and bouzouki; both undeniable ...
