Tim Burton's 1988 film about deceased ghosts (Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis) and a bio-exorcist (Michael Keaton) is remastered. Bonuses: cartoons. In the surreal, wonderfully cartoon-like comedy BEETLEJUICE, a childless couple, Barbara and Adam (Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin), move to the country only to be killed in a car accident while passing over a quaint covered bridge. Their ghosts return to their beloved Victorian home, and find the HANDBOOK FOR THE RECENTLY DECEASED, which not only lets them know they're dead, but comes in handy when they learn that they can continue to live in their house, even though a new family--from the land of the living--is moving in. The new owners, fresh from the city, are quite a strange group themselves, and include the overpowering hipster mom Delia (Catherine O'Hara), her pompous SoHo interior designer Otho (Glenn Shadix), her meek husband Charles (Jeffrey Jones), and their morose teenage daughter Lydia (Winona Ryder), who befriends the ghostly couple. Though the threesome attempt to scare Delia from ruining the house with redecoration and her unpleasant personality, their attempts fail. As a last resort, they call upon the services of the demented, terrifying, but hilarious "bioexorcist," "Beetlejuice" (Michael Keaton). Director Tim Burton scores big with witty site gags, incredible special effects and sets, and a unique ensemble of characters. BEETLEJUICE is a visually inventive and imaginative comedy taken to a uniquely grotesque and funny level by the manic performance of Michael Keaton in the title role. BEETLEJUICE is number 88 on the American Film Institute's list of America's 100 Funniest Movies.
Director Tim Burton cast Michael Keaton in his next film--in the starring role of Batman, a complete departure from the character Beetlejuice.
Burton brought his animator sensibility to the make-up, effects, and sets of BEETLEJUICE, using stop-motion, animation and pixilation effects in some of the scenes.
Dick Cavett, who played fancy New York dinner guest Bernard, is best known as a high-brow talk show host.
Burton repeatedly cast Winona Ryder, Jeffrey Jones, and Catherine O'Hara in several of his other films.
BEETLEJUICE won an Academy Award for Best Makeup.
Beetlejuice Reviews: "...BEETLEJUICE springs to life....A hoot..."
-- Brit., Variety "...[A] mind-boggling, sporran-whirring fantasy-reality teaser..."
-- Harlan Kennedy, Film Comment "...An uproarious ghost comedy....The film is a dazzling display of director Tim Burton's unique pop culture sensibility..."
-- Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times "This movie does for Harry Belafonte's 'Banana Boat Song' (aka Day-O) what ADVENTURE did for 'Tequila'."-- Mike Clark, USA Today 4 stars out of 5 -- "[W]hat counts here is the outlandish special effects, the genius set-pieces and the now typically Burton view of the afterlife as an extension of the everyday."-- William Thomas, Empire "Tim Burton's second feature has Michael Keaton doing a sensational star turn in the title role of a self-styled bio-exorcist. After two decades the film remains one of the funniest ghost stories ever made."Wall Street Journal Beetlejuice | List Price | $14.96 (You save $6.17) | | Studio | Warner Home Video | | Orig Year | 1988 | | All Time Sales Rank | 14899 | | CD Universe Part number | 7695454 | | Catalog number | 1000035882 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Sep 16, 2008 | | Rating | PG (MPAA) | | Running Time | 92 Minutes | | Additional Info | Widescreen; Anniversary Edition; Dubbed; Subtitled; Deluxe Edition | | Movie Details | Color; Widescreen; Anniversary Edition; Dubbed; Subtitled; Deluxe Edition |

Beetlejuice DVD What's a couple of stay-at-home ghosts to do when their beloved home is taken over by trendy yuppies? They call on Beetlejuice, the afterlife's freelance bio-exorcist to scare off the family - and everyone gets more than she, he or it bargains for! Tim Burton guides this PG-rated comedy monsterpiece whose stars include Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, and Winona Ryder. And Michael Keaton is Beetlejuice, the ghost with the most who flings one-liners, spins into grotesque forms, gobbles insects, and who just can't leave the ladies (living or dead) alone. Ghoul love it!

| | From Beyond DVD (1986)
Beetlejuice DVD
$10.19 The second H.P. Lovecraft adaptation by Stuart Gordon, FROM BEYOND is pure Lovecraftian science-terror. Out-there scientist Dr. Pretorious (Ted Sorel) and his assistant, Dr. Tillinghast (Jeffery Combs), are working towards breaking through earthly perceptions and revealing a new alternate universe. They do this by stimulating the pineal gland of the human brain, which enables people to see the strange creatures that inhabit a parallel dimension. Unfortunately, these creatures can now see humans as well, and they are none too pleased with it. Dr. Pretorious is killed by the floating monstrosities, but the police blame his assistant for the murder and lock him up. Only Dr. Katharine McMichaels (Barbara Crampton) believes the insane tales of Dr. Tillinghast, and it's up to her to shut down the experiment that threatens to unleash the other-dimensional creatures on this universe forever. Great special effects and solid performances by Combs and Crampton complement a near-perfect realization by Gordon of Lovecraft's vividly detailed and chilling vision of scientific possibilities.

Beetlejuice video
$13.55 French director Alexandre Aja adds to his growing canon of horror features with this remake of the Korean feature GEOUL SOKEURO (2003). Kiefer Sutherland stars as Ben Carson, a disgraced former New York City cop who attempts to put his checkered past behind him by taking a job as a security guard. Carson is required to take the night shift in a department store in the city. The store closed down after a fire put an end to its business, and Carson soon discovers that malevolent spirits are lurking behind its walls. The spirits connect with the human world through the mirrors in the store, and when they discover Carson's presence they go after his ex-wife, Amy (Paula Patton), and his kids (played by Erica Gluck and Cameron Boyce). Carson attempts to figure out the meaning of a cryptic message carved into one of the mirrors, hoping it will save his family and cut off contact with the malignant lurking presence.
Aja successfully replicates much of the tension and edge-of-your-seat moments that he managed so skillfully in HAUTE TENSION (2003). The film begins with an unnerving set piece in which Carson's predecessor takes a shard of mirror and slashes his own throat, and it's an indication of the gore-filled fun that awaits intrepid viewers. Aja creates a palpable sense of unease by shooting dim-lit set pieces in the department store. Sutherland makes for a convincing lead in a character that closely resembles his turn as Jack Bauer in 24. There are plenty of genuine scares in the film, and the director ultimately spins MIRRORS as a cross between a psychological thriller in the vein of the POLTERGEIST movies and a no-holds-barred splatter flick.

THE LAND BEFORE TIME IX: JOURNEY TO BIG WATER- Don Bluth's popular animated series is back with another installment in the ongoing adventures of Littlefoot, the loveable bracheosaurus. In this episode, Littlefoot and his five friends travel to the Great Valley in order to explore its wonders and end up testing the boundaries of their friendship on the long and dangerous journey.
