Two big names and one rather small score.
This is a very nice showcase of the "Zimmer sound". You can always be sure that Zimmer penned the driving triplets and sixteenths played steadily by the strings. And James Newton-Howard. The pretty little piano tunes were definetly his idea. It is truly wonderful that the two managed to mesh their varying style into a flowing score, and even more wonderful that they came back for round two. It is epic, driving, charismatic, haunting. But overall, it is a film score. This score is not meant to stand alone, because without the film, it isn't as adventurous. Zimmer's rhythmic drive gets repetitive. This isn't orchestral music, this is genius film scoring that fit so well with the movie it was written for that I hardly noticed it when viewing the film. The music just went with the movie. I cannot imagine the film without the music. But I cannot imagine the music without the film.
