Despite the somewhat misleading title, DÉJA VU LIVE is not a live version of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's 1970 classic. In 2006, following the release of Neil Young's unapologetically political protest album, LIVING WITH WAR, a Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young reunion called the Freedom Of Speech Tour featured a set list comprising both Young's new album (including plainspoken tracks such as "Let's Impeach the President") and politically minded material from their heyday, including Graham Nash's "Military Madness" and the Buffalo Springfield protest anthem, "For What It's Worth." DÉJA VU LIVE is the soundtrack to a similarly named documentary about that tour.

Rolling Stone (p.84) - "Young's songs are the true rocket-launchers on DEJA VU LIVE. His squiggly guitar blasts also act as the gunpowder that fires older tunes like Graham Nash's 'Military Madness'..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.112) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "The utilitarian heft of Young's new material is lent added sophistication by the still-sainted harmonies of Nash and Crosby..." Record Collector (magazine) (p.86) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "The album includes numerous full-length soundboard takes of songs that are only heard as excerpts in the documentary....The message still rings through loud and clear..." Deja Vu Live Music Review Average Rating: (1.7 out of 5 stars) An Outstandingly Awful Record This pains me becasue I have been a fan since 1969. I gave it a 1 only because I can't give it a zero. This album is a disgrace from a group known for great songwriting, playing and harmonies. The engineering mix is awful. They sing flat and out of tune. There is a lot of crowd noise. Deju Vu and its jam is the only remotely interesting song. Most new versions of old classics are wretched excuses of better days. Half the record has Neil Young's all sound the same miserable anti war songs from "Living With War."
Don't waste your time or money on this turkey. It is also the soundtrack for a movie of a concert of the same name which has been rated by others as equally awful. Go listen to the 1st or 2nd album and remember how great they used to be. It sure isn't on this record. This is the end of their career. Submitted by Doc (Dallas Texas) Was This Review Helpful? Good to hear them again!!! I guess that they should release a DVD instead of this CD. Submitted by brando (Sao Paulo - Brazil) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
For super fans only... This one should be called "Living With War: Live," period. Fully half of this live CD are the musically plodding (and politically charged) songs from Neil Young's studio CD (LWW), done by CSNY. The LWW theme-song appears THREE times during the set; an unbelievable waste of recording time. The remaining (all but one) warhorse songs appear in much superior versions elsewhere. The crowd noise fades in and out between songs too, so this tripe does not "sound" like a concert, either. I love CSN(and/or)Y music (regardless of politics), so it pains me to rate this CD so poorly. But it is what it is, suboptimal performances on a vanity recording at best and a huge miscalculation at worst.
Super fans might want to invest in this CD for the live version of the song "Deja Vu" that finally features all four of CSNY. You might smile at the Buffalo-Springfield inspired guitar sounds on "For What It's Worth," too. But I doubt you really need yet another live version of "Teach Your Children," no matter how brilliant a song it is. Submitted by Richard (Northeastern, PA) Was This Review Helpful?
