David Sanborn's 23 release as a leader finds the veteran saxophonist looking back to his roots. While still fitting comfortably within the smooth, accessible sound Sanborn is known for, HERE AND GONE salutes the blues, R&B, and pop genres that inspired the artist in his youth. Covers of Percy Mayfield's "Please Send Me Someone to Love" and Ray Charles's "I Believe It to My Soul" are two cases in point. The album also shines with guest stars, including Eric Clapton, Joss Stone, Derek Trucks, and Steve Gadd, among many others. With help from his friends, Sanborn goes straight to the bluesy heart of jazz, an aim that's immediately apparent on the standard, "St. Louis Blues," that kicks off the album. Overflowing with excellent playing, HERE AND GONE is soulful and sweet, and shows Sanborn coming full circle.

Arranger: Gil Goldstein.JazzTimes (p.68) - "There's a joyful bounce to David Sanborn's playing on HERE AN DGONE that stands up to repeated listening. You get the feeling he had a ball recording it."
Record Collector (magazine) (p.93) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[With] ear-catching cameos...but they don't distract from Sanborn's gutsy sax, which shines most refulgent on Gil Goldstein's elegant big band arrangements of 'St. Louis Blues' and 'Basin St. Blues.' Undoubtedly Sanborn's best set in years."

Expressive, soulful and full of blues David Sanborns' "here & gone" allows the artist an opportunity to explore his roots in music. Genius + Soul = Sanborn and a modern music classic. This soulful expression of the Blues pays tribute to the Genius of Ray Charles.

Unconditional
Kirk Whalum Unconditional CD  (2000)

Here & Gone music CDs
CD $22.65  5 stars
"Playing With Fire" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. UNCONDITIONAL was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Album. "There You'll Be" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. No doubt the title of Unconditional applies to the love of God that pervades his music and life, but like most of Whalum's efforts, this collection can be enjoyed by a wide audience. The centerpiece title song isn't blatantly gospel, but Whalum's textured multiple tenor lines rise powerfully towards the heavens like a soaring choir after making their main melodic hook statements. At one point, Whalum improvises crisply over Greg Phillinganes' simmering Rhodes as Luis Conte's percussion dances around him. "Now Till Forever" begins with a more meditative, smoky approach before Whalum, backed by John Stoddart's soulful wordless vocals, puts a little more oomph in the chorus. On "Playing With Fire," Whalum's soaring lines are answered and expounded upon by the balmy acoustic guitar breezes of Peter White; late in the tune, Whalum textures his ...

Hacienda Brothers What's Wrong With Right CD  (2006)

CD $15.15  Audio Samples
The second album from the Hacienda Brothers, 2006's What's Wrong with Right, is cut from the same cloth as the self-titled 2004 debut from Chris Gaffney, guitarist Dave Gonzalez, and their musical cronies, but if the approach is very much the same, there's no arguing that they've gotten even better at fusing classic country and old-school soul into one emotionally powerful package. If one wants to pinpoint a difference this time out, the R&B side of the mixture has been beefed up, and Chris Gaffney's vocals communicate the necessary passion and heartache with genuine force and a fine actor's sense of drama; while Gaffney has always been a fine singer, his performances here rank with his best work in the studio to date. Dave Gonzalez doesn't bring quite as much flashy picking to What's Wrong with Right, giving pedal steel player David Berzansky more room to move, but when he does step up, ...
Ordinary Girl
Rachanee Ordinary Girl CD  (2004)

Here & Gone album
CD $11.15
BiographyLife-changing revelations can come at odd moments. For singer/songwriter Rachanee, it was during a job interview.

Unable to choose between pursuing a career in music or a career in photojournalism, her mentor and interviewer Nancy suggested she flip a coin to decide which one to focus on for a year. "But," Nancy warned Rachanee, "picking one means completely giving up the other. So if it comes up photography, you stop writing songs, you quit the band, you put away your guitar... are you ready?"Rachanee replied, "Don't flip the coin."And that one little decision sparked the pursuit of a dream.

Rachanee has been compared to "Michelle Branch [and] Christian artist Jennifer Knapp, [with] a voice that can sound like Natalie Merchant" (Noise, Oct. 2003). Her music has a guitar-driven folk/rock feel; her heartfelt lyrics appeal to any audience.
