Based on Paul Scott's THE RAJ QUARTET. Produced for Granada Television in the UK, and broadcast January 9 through March 3, 1984, on ITV. Originally aired in 14 episodes, running time 15 hours. Shot on location in India.
According to the BFI book on "British Television," The miniseries was made under the personal supervision of Granada TV chairman Sir Denis Forman, taking approximately four years to produce and costing around 5 million pounds sterling.
Originally broadcast in the United States on PBS's MASTERPIECE THEATRE in a 15-week timespan. A real masterpeace. I bought the DVD-box and all the magic of the 1984 series (we saw it in Holland on television too) is still there. Fantastic charachter-play, especially by Peggy Ashcroft, Rachel Kempson, Eric Porter, Charles Dance and Geraldine James.
I loved (and still love) the way in which emotions are kept 'under the skin', as between Guy Perron (Dance) and Sarah Laughton (James), or Daphne Manners (Susan Wooldridge) and Hari Kumar (Art Malik). You can feel the tension, but it is never underlined. Wonderful acting.
