While Stanley Clarke, Chick Corea, and Lenny White, the core unit of Return to Forever, are most closely associated with quintessential 1970s fusion, GRIFFITH PARK COLLECTION is a different beast altogether. Looking back to classic post-bop, Clarke, Corea, and White are joined by the hard-bop veterans Freddie Hubbard (trumpet) and Joe Henderson (tenor saxophone) for an acoustic session that edges closer to the sound of Miles Davis's classic quintet dates than anything post-BITCHES BREW. Corea, White, Clarke, and Hubbard all contribute original compositions on this thoroughly enjoyable return to modern jazz territory.

"Griffith Park Collection" 1982

This disc, though recorded in 1982, is straight (albeit quite sophisticated) Bebop. Not the type of jazz you would normally associate with the first three names on the list, which is only a secondary reason that this disc is of interest. The primary reason is, of course, the music. All tunes (with one exception) are original compositions by the band members. The compositions and arrangements are nothing less than exquisite and the musicianship is astounding, especially considering that each tune (and some are rather complicated) was recorded in two takes or less. For the most part, the sound is right out of the mid 60s. As I recall, this record went to cutout in a matter of minutes (I guess no one was interested in CC playing bebop in the early 80s) and the CD release is long overdue.
Highlights:
The opening number, "Ls Bop", is a Lenny White composition in 4/4 with a furious tempo and a brilliant, six bar 5/8 break at the end of the form. Really wicked.
"Why Wait" is a deliberately paced blues variation with a simple melody and a form that alternates between 12 and 14 bars (24 and 28 if you count fast). The 14 bar section ends each time with the horns playing a bebopish lick over several measures. Dark passion is the undercurrent.
Just to show it isnt all pious devotion, "Happy Times" is a fun little number with a playful (stacatto) melody and slightly angular harmonic movement.
Great stuff. Really great.
