Mark David Chapman arrives in wintry New York City, where he quickly assumes the identity of THE CATCHER IN THE RYE protagonist Holden Caulfield, eager to cleanse a world filled with "phonies." Chapman makes his way to the tony Dakota apartment building where Lennon lives, and strikes up a tentative friendship with a sweetly naive groupie named Jude (Lindsay Lohan). Chapman becomes increasingly torn by his avenging impulses, losing himself further and further in Holden Caulfield's character, until an initial encounter with Lennon seals the fates of both men. Leto, who gained more than 60 pounds for the part, immerses himself completely in the role of the mercurial Chapman, whose bulky exterior concealed a troubled soul and conflicted motivations towards the world. First-time director Jarrett Schaefer wisely forgoes any attempt to use the film as either a definitive explanation of the event or a stinging indictment of Chapman. Instead, CHAPTER 27 asks us to see how the source of tragedy can be more human than we realize, and how tragic acts so often hinge on the fragility of the human spirit. Whale isn't necessarily a band, it's a studio project by a pair of Swedish television personalities, who also happen to be ex-lovers. In other words, it's a highly stylized and manufactured album that is proud of its artificiality. Even more than that, Whale is about sex, particularly dirty, tawdry sex. From the blunt come-ons of "I'll Do Ya," to the lesbian fantasies about Saint Etienne's Sarah Cracknell on "Eurodog," We Care positively seethes with sex. No matter how dirty Whale gets ("Young, Dumb & Full of Cum" is about as far as they go), there is a jokey sense of good humor that keeps We Care from being an oppressively sleazy affair. The indie ladies of Cake Like are back with a third album, their second for Neil Young's Vapor Records, and the pop kitsch continues. On Goodbye, So What?, Cake Like appears considerably more focused on musicianship and eager to define a characteristic sound than on previous records. Kerri Kinney's vocals are misty yet tightly executed, and the harmonies from Nina Hellman are sweet. Album opener "Lucky One" sounds sneaky with its straining Wurlitzer loops, and "Dead to Me" and the Sonic Youth-esque "Getaway" maintain a keen sense of rock originality comparable to artists like Liz Phair and the Pixies. "My Guy" is an anthem for the independent woman who avoids love fantasies and their attendant frustrations; it's not feminist in the sense of Lilith, but rather sassy indie rock similar to the likes of Kim Deal, Kristin Hersh, and Boss Hog's Cristina Martinez. ...
