| | John Tchicai Big Chief Dreaming CD (2005)
10 De Coleccion songs
$17.09 Upon first glance, this CD looks unusual. John Tchicai, famous for his work on alto in the 1960s avant-garde with the New York Contemporary Five, with the New York Art Quartet, and on John Coltrane's monumental Ascension project, switched to tenor in the 1980s. His playing has become much more mellow since his early days, although he is still an explorative player. For this project he is matched with guitarist Garrison Fewell, a straight-ahead cool-toned player who is co-leader. The rest of the group is comprised of three Italians: Tino Tracanna on soprano and tenor, bassist Paolino Dalla Porta, and drummer Massimo Manzi. Tracanna often takes solo honors, particularly on soprano, although it is the interaction of the two horns with Fewell that is most memorable. The quintet plays a dozen originals written or co-composed by Tchicai, Fewell, and/or Trancanna. The music tends to be tightly controlled, hinting at 1950s West Coast jazz while being a bit more modern. Tchicai, who doubles on bass clarinet, is in excellent if laid-back form. Several of the songs, particularly "Prayer for Right Guidance," "Simplicity," the whimsical "Thrift Shopping + Extension," and the funky "Bassetto," deserve to be covered by other musicians. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow
Look no further than this record for evidence of a global jazz community. On "Big Chief Dreaming", we find an American guitarist who divides his time between Europe and Boston, Massachusetts; a Danish-born saxophonist who has made his home in New York City, California, and southern France; and three Italian musicians who are lynchpins in vital local and national jazz communities. This geographic diversity doesn't hinder their ability to come together as equals, and forge a distinct group identity. In fact, because the musicians are rooted in strong indigenous music scenes, their music can be cosmopolitan in its reach, and universal in its emotional appeal. The quintet's personality is refracted through compositional lenses of Tchicai, Tracanna, and Fewell. Tchicai's tunes draw freely on folkloric sources as well as his own highly developed and utterly contemporary sense of melody. "Prayer for Right Guidance" according to Tchicai, "has some connection to the Native American spirit, which can be heard most clearly in the drums." The melody, however, is pure Tchicai. The hypnotic pulse laid down by bass and drums, with Fewell's chord voicings adding color, inspires ...
| | Planet Imaginario Biomasa CD (2008)
10 De Coleccion album
$14.49 As long as there are beardy guys with a lot of science fiction paperbacks scattered around their apartments, progressive jazz-rock fusion will never truly die. There are even times when it's worth listening to for folks who don't fit that demographic. Planeta Imaginario (yes, they have science fiction paperbacks in the band's native Spain as well) is an eight-piece outfit led by keyboardist and primary songwriter Marc Capel, with a four-piece horn section balancing a basic rock quartet lineup. Although they started as a progressive rock act, their second album (the first to achieve wide distribution) is closer to mainstream contemporary jazz ...

| | Kenny Loggins Keep The Fire CD (1979) Reissued
10 De Coleccion CD music
$9.69 Originally issued in 1979, KEEP THE FIRE finds Kenny Loggins's solo career in full swing. As its expansive sky-themed cover implies, FIRE is a largely dreamy affair that features plenty of light-rock tunes, most notably the gently funky hit single "This Is It" (with Michael McDonald) and the drifting, R&B-tinged "Give It Have a Chance." For fans of the singer's post-Loggins & Messina years, this album is essential.
With a genuine hit to his credit, Kenny Loggins decided to stretch himself a bit on Keep the Fire, hiring Tom Dowd and toughening his sound slightly, adding a more flamboyant production in the process. He also decided to look like Doug Henning on the cover, which may be a surer sign that success had started to go to his head. All this resulted in a self-consciously tougher record than either of its predecessors, with a punchy sound, detailed production, and shades of boogie. Relying more on original material, this winds up being more uneven than Nightwatch, but it boasts more character, even if that means something as silly as "Mr. Night." Also, the record, though clearly presented as a relative ...
