| | Ivan Utopia Rising CD (2008)
The Awakening album
$9.59 Traversing two decades and two continents, the album Utopia Rising is a culmination of the artist's journey through life and the interpretation of his experiences. Some material was born years ago with the influences of 60s and 70s music while other material from angst of the injustice of the modern world. Travels to South America and exposure to the artistic form of 'World Music' further impacting the artist and pivoting a new found understanding of the universal language; music. Ivan has utilized the ultimate form of expression with the hope of truly finding a Utopia Rising.Lyrics:1. $10.49 Poor EMI -- there they are with all that Peter Tosh material, and no clue what to do with it. It's not all their fault; the artist himself made their life a misery, for after releasing two of the most militant albums known to mankind on Virgin, Tosh meandered all over the place in search of mass acceptance, both musically and thematically. His two sets for Rolling Stones Records aimed for international stardom, and succeeded, but at a price. After that, there was no looking back, as Tosh played to the new world market while simultaneously attempting to at least thematically satisfy his more militant roots fans back home. Gold Collection has no interest in them, though, concentrating heavily on the lightweight fluff of the artist's career.
Cashing in on No Nuclear War's posthumous Grammy success, this set throws on the entire album, bar "Fight Apartheid." Bush Doctor is represented by the title track and, of course, "(You Gotta Walk And) Don't Look Back." Mystic Man is represented by "Crystal Ball"; Wanted Dread & Alive by "Reggaemylitis" and "Coming in Hot," both arguably Tosh's nadir; and Mama Africa by "Johnny B. Goode" and the recut of "Maga Dog." If this is your entrance to Tosh, you'll wonder what all the fuss is about and why anyone considered him a revolutionary; Jamaica's most militant son is reconstituted into a safe, cuddly world artist. The former Wailer must have been spinning in his grave. ~ Jo-Ann Greene
Two years after the fact, the European Disky label gave a budget release to the EMI Gold Collection set. In a sad kind of way, Gold was the perfect fodder for the casual U.S. reggae fan. Obviously it was going to hone in on No Nuclear War, the set that won Tosh a posthumous Grammy, but tossing in the entire album, bar "Fight Apartheid," does seem a little much. Which means, the rest of his EMI albums don't get much of a look-in. In fact, Captured Live is omitted entirely, Mystic Man is dismissed with a single track, and Wanted Dread & Alive and Mama Africa rate a measly two numbers each. A far from even-handed overview, then.
