4 stars At long last
The Three Sounds released a lot of stuff with Blue Note records, but precious little has been released on CD. This is from towards the end of their stint with Blue Note and goes beyond the straight trio stuff into lusher backing. Not their best period, but if your a fan you will have to get this.

5 stars This is Classic Jazz
With the combination of strings and piano, this album of the early '70 was a trendsetter for jazz. You will not hear sounds like this again.

Set in the weeks before the fall of Atlanta, a Union soldier finds himself stranded in the hills of North Georgia, engaged in mortal combat with a Confederate infantryman behind enemy lines. The Yankee kills the Confederate rebel, and then, and then in order to save himself, puts on the rebel's uniform. Attempting to find his way back to his own regiment, the Yankee is captured as a deserter by Colonel Arthur Medraut of the 34th Louisiana who is fighting a defensive action against Sherman's army. The impersonator is saved by Hamlet, one of the Colonel's slaves, who heads a trio of slaves who travel with the 34th Louisiana for the sole purpose of entertaining the Colonel and his troops with scenes from Shakespeare. The Yankee finds himself traveling with the ill-fated regiment as they back their way towards the burning city of Atlanta, part of this strange little band of actors, learning about love, Shakespeare and revenge.Marcus Hummon, has been one of Nashville's most consistently successful and innovative songwriters, and was named "Nashville's Top Songwriter" by the Nashville Scene's Readers Poll three years in a row. BIOGRAPHY Erica Lindsay, tenor saxophonist and composer, currently leads her own quartet featuring Francesca Tanksley on piano, and co-leads a quartet with pianist Sumi Tonooka that features Bob Braye and Rufus Reid. Two new recordings with these ensembles respectively are, "Yes - Live at the Rosendale Cafe" and the soon to be released, "Initiation". She also currently performs with the Oliver Lake Big Band, the Baikida Carroll Quintet, the Howard Johnson, Hojo5 Quintet, the Jeff Siegel Quartet and the San Francisco-based group, Trace Elements. Her most recent recordings with these ensembles are, "Cloth," (Oliver Lake Big Band) "Magical Spaces," (Jeff Siegel Quartet), "Marionettes on a High Wire," (Baikida Carroll Quintet) and "Parallel Universe" (Trace Elements). Lindsay is presently working on releasing two duo projects: one with percussionist Ricky Carter ("Soulcatcher") and the other with drummer Bob Braye. Royal Stokes, writing for the Jazz Times has called her "a player of enormous gifts and a composer and arranger of striking originality". As a composer and performer, Joe was primarily concerned with drawing the listener's attention to long time structures, forms occurring in the natural world, and the archaeological record. He wrote music for the concert hall, theater, film, and gallery spaces, using various instruments including keyboard, electronic drones and harmonics, piano and harpsichord, harmonic singing, the didgeridoo, and an instrument he invented, The Spirit Stick, as well as many others.
