Uriah Heep Wake the Sleeper CD (2008)
Along Came a Spider buy CD music Although Uriah Heep is known for its extensive personnel changes, its lineup has been stable since the mid-'80s; unfortunately, that stability coincided with the band's commercial decline (its last album to chart in the U.S. came in 1983, its last in its native U.K., 1985). So, no one outside the group's fan base noticed that the quintet of founding member and guitarist Mick Box, drummer Lee Kerslake (1971-1978, 1982-2007), bassist Trevor Bolder (who joined in 1977, left during the band's hiatus in the early '80s, and returned a couple of years after its re-formation), singer Bernie Shaw, and keyboard player Phil Lanzon (both of whom joined in the mid-'80s) remained in place through numerous world tours and the studio albums Raging Silence (1989), Different World (1991), Sea of Light (1995), and Sonic Origami (1998). Since then, a series of live albums have testified to Uriah Heep's continued existence. In January 2007, Kerslake bowed out due to health problems and was replaced by the capable Russell Gilbrook. Wake the Sleeper, Uriah Heep's first studio album in ten years and 21st overall, finds the group attempting to reclaim its original glory. It has had time to gather some quality material and to assess its long-term musical approach, and the album is both consistent with its sound over the years and a statement of purpose for the present and the future. As if to blow away the cobwebs, the album begins with three consecutive quick-tempo rockers, the title song (which has no lyrics except for that title), "Overload," and the socially conscious "Tears of the World" ("The tears of the world keep falling until we stand together.") Things slow down only slightly with "Light of a Thousand Stars," which, like much of the rest of the album, sounds like it could have been made in 1978 instead of 2008. The guitar/organ/bass/drums instrumental lineup often recalls Deep Purple, and Shaw's clear tenor is reminiscent of Journey's Steve Perry and Boston's Brad Delp. This, of course, is one of the problems with Uriah Heep. Thirty-eight years into an artist's career, critics should not be falling back on the "sounds like" game to describe the music. And yet those comparisons are hard to avoid; one hears a little Led Zeppelin here ("Book of Lies"), a little Deep Purple there ("Angels Walk with You"), and sometimes just a generic '70s prog rock style ("Heavens Rain," "What Kind of God"). But maybe that's just to say that Wake the Sleeper isn't going to change anyone's mind about Uriah Heep. The album is true to the band's legacy, and the songs should please longtime fans who come out to the shows, juxtaposed with more familiar old songs in the set list. ~ William Ruhlmann
2008 release, Uriah Heep's first studio album in almost 10 years. Wake The Sleeper is set to herald an exciting new phase for the band, taking their classic sound right into the future. The album see’s Uriah Heep back to their very best and is set to become a future classic: sure to please their dedicated worldwide fan base and fans of Progressive Rock in general. Recorded in 2007 the album was produced by Mike Paxman (Status Quo, Judie Tzuke). This is the band's first album without their long-standing and original drummer, Lee Kerslake who sadly had to leave the band due to ill health in January 2007. Filling the drum stool for the very first time is the hugely well respected Russell Gilbrook. The current band also features Mick Box, Trevor Bolder, Phil Lanzon and Bernie Shaw. 11 tracks including 'Overload', 'Tears ...

Michael Schenker Group / Michael Schenker In the Midst of Beauty CD (2008)
Along Came a Spider album for sale Michael Schenker/Michael Schenker Group: Gary Barden (vocals); Don Airy (keyboards); Neil Murray (bass guitar); Simon Phillips (drums).
Few rock guitarists are as talented Michael Schenker, yet he hasn't enjoyed the mainstream success he richly deserves. Maddening personal and business problems have weighed him down for most of his career. He joined Scorpions as a teenager before serving a turbulent stint in UFO that still managed to produce a handful of classic '70s hard rock albums -- all of which should have been big hits. The Michael Schenker Group and then the McAuley Schenker Group/MSG with vocalist Robin McAuley became slicker-sounding solo vehicles for the German axe slinger, but widespread fame remained just out of reach. A few reunions with UFO were short-lived. In 2008, Schenker and original Michael Schenker Group vocalist Gary Barden revived the band and released In the Midst of Beauty under the moniker MSG Schenker-Barden. They are joined on the album by three highly respected veterans: keyboardist Don Airey (Rainbow, Deep Purple), bass guitarist Neil Murray (Whitesnake), and drummer Simon Phillips (Toto). Make no mistake, they are literally supporting players and this is Schenker and Barden's show. In the Midst of Beauty is a no-frills hard rock album made by musicians who helped define and refine the genre. The in-your-face production showcases Schenker's jaw-dropping guitar work and Barden's throaty, lived-in voice. Schenker is revered by guitar fanatics for his rich tone and fast, fluidly precise attack, and on In the Midst of Beauty the tone is grittier and a little more distorted than his earlier work. This gives the songs a more modern edge. "City Lights" and "I Want You" are straight-up rockers. The fast and furious "Competition" rumbles with punk-like energy. "The Cross of Crosses" thunders along as Barden's ambitious lyrics bubble with religious imagery. "Na Na" relies on a midtempo groove and a catchy chorus. "Summerdays" is the most complex and nuanced song on the album as Schenker weaves sweet acoustic lines with his signature electric style. The arrangement of "Ride on My Way" changes throughout while showing flashes of pop that hint at Schenker's radio-aimed '80s and early-'90s efforts. In the Midst of Beauty isn't revolutionary, but it does enjoyably spotlight the incredible talents of old pros who still have fire in their bellies. ~ Bret Adams
Michael Schenker is truly a legend. From helping form the Scorpions to his stint with UFO, his guitar prowess has been electrifying from the beginning. This brand new recording perfectly captures the MSG aesthetic and mystique, which makes sense as 4/5ths of the original MSG are back in the fold! Singer Gary Barden, drummer Simon Phillips and keyboardist Don Airey join Schenker and bassist Neil Murray for one of their best (and most highly anticipated) recordings and a return to classic MSG form. Pushing the boundaries of hard rock, heavy metal and blues rock to the limits which his old fans love and which will impress a wide range of new fans.
Personnel: Michael Schenker (guitar); Don Airey (keyboards).
Audio Mixers: Siggi Schwarz; Romi Schickle.

Eyes of Alice Cooper CD (2003) Top Seller
Along Came a Spider CD music The resurgence of garage rock inspired veteran shock-rocker Alice Cooper to embark on a long-overdue return to the meat-and-potatoes sound he helped pioneer in the 1970s. With the help of producer Mudrock (Powerman 5000, Godsmack) and a crack band, Cooper succeeds beyond expectations with THE EYES OF ALICE COOPER.
Stripped of the '80s metal armor that went on to burden much of his work in the '90s, Alice has found ideal collaborators in guitarists Ryan Roxie and Eric Dover (the latter known for the '60s and '70s rock sound of his work with Imperial Drag and Jellyfish). Lyrically, Cooper has his tongue planted firmly in cheek. From tales of trailer trash ("What Do You Want From Me?"), morbid sarcasm ("Man of the Year") to the requisite macabre ("This House Is Haunted"), Alice has lost none of his edge. In fact, on "Detroit City," Cooper pays tribute to the musical legacy of his beloved hometown, featuring a guest spot by MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer. THE EYES OF ALICE COOPER captures its twisted creator inspired and poised to shock the masses with his time-honed talent.

Dirty Diamonds CD (2005) Top Seller
Along Came a Spider buy CD music Apparently, the return to 1970s-era form on 2003's THE EYES OF ALICE COOPER wasn't a one-shot deal. On 2005's DIRTY DIAMONDS, Cooper continues the earlier release's straight-up hard-rock vibe. (Even the covers of both albums--focusing on the shock rocker's makeup-caked eyes--are strikingly similar.) Cooper's patented mix of sleaze and horror is as reliable as ever, with the revved-up "Woman of Mass Distraction" and the giddy "You Make Me Wanna" playing off the lurching "Run Down the Devil" and the bluesy, morbid "Zombie Dance."
The softer side of the man formerly known as Vincent Furnier is revealed on "The Saga of Jesse Jane," a humorous, slightly twangy tune where Cooper trades his signature raspy voice for a fuller croon, and a surprisingly tender take on the Left Banke's "Pretty Ballerina." Of course, the bulk of DIRTY DIAMONDS consists of energetic, guitar-heavy rock songs. One of the most shocking aspects of Cooper is how--more than three decades into his recording career--he sounds as invigorated as ever.
