$10.29 One of John Ford's most cherished projects, THE QUIET MAN took years to finance but became one of his greatest box-office successes and an enduringly beloved classic. John Wayne stars as Sean Thornton, a retired American boxing champion trying to put tragedy behind him by returning to Innisfree, the bucolic Irish village of his birth. He purchases his birthplace from its current owner, enraging the wealthy and bellicose Red Will Danaher (Victor McLaglen), who had designs on the property. On arriving at his cottage, Thornton finds it being swept out by Mary Kate Danaher (Maureen O'Hara), a redheaded vision from whom he steals a not completely unwelcome kiss. After engaging in a subterfuge involving a horse race, some of the locals manage to get the disgruntled Red Will to allow his sister to be ...

Shoot on Sight review
Jaideep Sen's KRAZZY 4, a comedy with suspenseful twists, is the story of four institutionalized "madmen" who discover that the world is far more dangerous than they remember. Taken for a recreational outing by their well-meaning therapist, they're soon embroiled in kidnapping, violence, and political corruption. The script's comic situations cleverly exploit the specific mental imbalance of each of the four patients: obsessive-compulsive disorder, persistent delusion, selective mutism, and uncontrollable rage. Many of the episodes are laugh-out-loud funny, yet the emotional quotient is often surprisingly high, generating some heartbreaking pathos capable of provoking a tear or two. In addition, the "insane" hilarity is balanced with sobering threats of violence. This dexterous alternation keeps the plot fluid.
Following in the footsteps of the American film THE DREAM TEAM, KRAZZY 4 is richer in philosophy than one might suppose. The age-old human conundrum of a "holy fool" remains a potent archetype: can it be that one must be "mad" to fully appreciate the hypocrisy and injustice that surround us in our "civilized" society? The naïve and forthright expression of the disturbed can sometimes shame the sanctimonious majority. In true ...
| | Phoebe In Wonderland DVD (2008) Widescreen; Subtitled
Shoot on Sight DVD
$21.25 Actress Elle Fanning (younger sister of Dakota Fanning) proves to have wisdom beyond her years with her raw and vulnerable performance as the title character in PHOEBE IN WONDERLAND. Both delightfully vivid and thought-provoking, PHOEBE IN WONDERLAND sensitively depicts a young girl living with the increasing symptoms of Tourette’s Syndrome. Unable to fit in with her classmates, Phoebe throws herself into her school’s production of ALICE IN WONDERLAND and finds a confidant and mentor in her drama teacher, played by the luminous Patricia Clarkson.
Both Felicity Huffman and Bill Pullman offer up stellar performances as Phoebe’s academic parents, who struggle to come to terms with their daughter’s illness while fighting to preserve the unique and imaginative child that they have raised. This story of battling the confines of the status quo--while accepting that there are problems outside of a family’s control--is one that will resound with parents living in an era that often questions whether it is overindulging or overmedicating its ...

| | Tyler Perry's Madea Goes To Jail DVD (2009) Widescreen; Dubbed; Subtitled
Shoot on Sight review
$14.65 Multitalented screenwriter, director, playwright, and actor Tyler Perry delivers yet another comedy feature from his popular MADEA film series. Largely concerned with African American family life, Perry splits his efforts between the outrageous Madea films and other, slightly more serious features such as 2008’s THE FAMILY THAT PREYS. As the name suggests, MADEA GOES TO JAIL, based on the 2006 play of the same title, once again stars Perry himself as Mabel B. Simmons (nicknamed Madea), the feisty, gun-loving grandmother audiences have adored on stage and screen since she first appeared in the 2002 play MADEA’S FAMILY REUNION. When Madea ends up in jail following a series of violent outbursts, she finds herself in equally eccentric company and causes chaos among her fellow inmates. In a fat suit and women’s clothing, Perry keeps things light while exploring signature themes of redemption, such as the young attorney (Derek Luke, NOTORIOUS) who sets out to help a prostitute (Keshia Knight Pulliam, THE COSBY SHOW) who holds a special place in his heart.
The New Orleans-born Renaissance man once again proves himself to be comfortable wearing many hats: as star, producer, writer, and director, Perry retains a constant presence but is careful not to outshine his talented co-stars, including Viola Davis (Oscar-nominated for her role in 2008’s DOUBT) as a determined social worker. Rivaling Woody Allen with the speed at which ...

| | Scott Walker: 30 Century Man DVD (2008)
Shoot on Sight movie DVD
$19.55 A percussionist slams his fists into a slab of raw meat; Scott Walker records the sounds from the control booth. The thumps will overlay his strangled vocals and menacing strings on his long awaited 2006 album, THE DRIFT. This scene from the documentary 30 CENTURY MAN highlights both the grimly primordial thrust of Walker's music and also how far he's strayed from his days as a 1960s heartthrob. As the frontman of the English sensation the Walker Brothers, the American-born singer swaggered before screaming teens belting such classic pop melancholia as "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore." But when he embarked on a solo career and incorporated the bleak librettos of Jacques Brel, Walker's music took a far more experimental turn: magnifying the psychic unease only suggested in the echo-laden backdrops of Phil Spector. Walker's old fans abandoned him and the singer went into seclusion, but a whole new generation of musicians eventually discovered his enigmatic, boundary-pushing songs--among them David Bowie, Brian Eno, Jarvis Cocker, and Radiohead (all of ...
