CCR seemed like something of an anomaly on their 1968 debut. They were miles from the mind-expanding flower-power explorations of their California contemporaries. They came across as a gritty, hard-hitting band respectful of their blues, country, and rock & roll roots. John Fogerty's cutting, raspy voice bore echoes of Howlin' Wolf and Little Richard as he delivered lyrics that alternately celebrated and bemoaned a working man's life, much like Merle Haggard and other '60s country artists. That the strong New Orleans swamp-rock flavor seemed so natural (Californian Fogerty's bayou tales were pure flights of fancy) was a testament to the strength of CCR's musical vision. The way they put a respectful but contemporary twist on Dale Hawkins's "Suzie Q" and the chilling "I Put a Spell on You" shows that they knew enough about the past to step confidently into rock & roll's future.
Released in the summer of 1968 -- a year after the summer of love, but still in the thick of the Age of Aquarius - Creedence Clearwater Revival's self-titled debut album was gloriously out-of-step with the times, teeming with John Fogerty's Americana fascinations. While many of Fogerty's obsessions and CCR's signatures are in place -- weird blues ("I Put a Spell on You"), Stax R&B (Wilson Pickett's "Ninety-Nine and a Half"), rockabilly ("Susie Q"), winding instrumental interplay, the swamp sound, and songs for "The Working Man" -- the band was still finding their way. Out of all their records (discounting Mardi Gras), this is the one that sounds the most like its era, thanks to the wordless vocal harmonies toward the end of "Susie Q," the backward guitars on "Gloomy," and the directionless, awkward jamming that concludes "Walking on the Water." Still, the band's sound is vibrant, with gutsy arrangements that borrow equally from Sun, Stax, and the swamp. Fogerty's songwriting is a little tentative. Not for nothing were two of the three singles pulled from the album covers (Dale Hawkins' "Susie Q," Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell on You") -- he wasn't an accomplished tunesmith yet. Though "The Working Man" isn't bad, the true exception is that third single, "Porterville," an exceptional song with great hooks, an underlying sense of menace, and the first inkling of the working-class rage that fueled such landmarks as "Fortunate Son." It's the s

| | Creedence Clearwater Revival Bayou Country CD (1969) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Digipak
Creedence Clearwater Revival
$8.65 Released in early 1969, the second album by guitarist/vocalist John Fogerty's Californian quartet is perhaps the definitive example of the group's swampy brew of rock, R&B, and blues. The key song on BAYOU COUNTRY is "Proud Mary," a rock milestone that still sounds just as fresh and exciting as it did when it first boomed out of AM radios decades ago. Although Creedence indulges in a few extended jams on tracks like "Keep On Chooglin" and "Graveyard Train," they forsake the gratuitous soloing favored by many of their San Francisco contemporaries in favor of fleshing out rhythmic, rock-solid grooves. From Fogerty's formidable bluesman's growl on "Born On The Bayou" to the explosive version of Little Richard's "Good Golly Miss Molly," BAYOU COUNTRY is what rootsy rock & roll is all about, and it's one of the best American rock albums of the '60s.
Opening slowly with the dark, swampy "Born on the Bayou," Bayou Country reveals an assured Creedence Clearwater Revival, a band that has found its voice between their first and second album. It's not just that "Born on the Bayou" announces that CCR has discovered its sound -- it reveals the extent of John Fogerty's myth-making. With this song, he sketches out his persona; it makes him sound as if he crawled out of the backwoods of Louisiana instead of being a native San Franciscan. He carries this illusion throughout the record, through the ominous meanderings of "Graveyard Train" through the stoked cover of "Good Golly Miss Molly" to "Keep on Chooglin'," which rides out a southern-fried groove for ...
| | Creedence Clearwater Revival Green River CD (1969) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Digipak
Creedence Clearwater Revival
$8.65 Creedence Clearwater Revival were part of a second wave of San Francisco groups, but unlike their geographical contemporaries, the quartet offered a disciplined music, indebted to '50s rock & roll and southern "swamp" styles. Leader, singer and songwriter John Fogerty possesses one of rock's most distinctive voices, his hoarse, urgent intonation matched by his group's mathematically precise drive. GREEN RIVER, their third album, includes two million-selling singles, the bluesy ...
| | Creedence Clearwater Revival Willy & The Poor Boys CD (1969) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Digipak
Creedence Clearwater Revival
$9.19 Opening up with the feel-good, down-home groove of the hit "Down on the Corner" and featuring all-out, belligerent roots rock like "Fortunate Son" and loose, soul-drenched instrumentals like "Side Of The Road," WILLY AND THE POOR BOYS is sensational from start to finish. Throughout CCR's brief career, their sound was a musical evocation of a mythic rural South, and WILLY AND THE POOR BOYS is arguably the most Southern-sounding of all their records. Even though this t10-song album is padded out with cover versions of ...
| | Creedence Clearwater Revival Cosmo's Factory CD (1970) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Digipak
Creedence Clearwater Revival
$8.65 Creedence Clearwater Revival's continued their reputation as a consummate singles act with the release of COSMO'S FACTORY. Three of its singles, the blazing "Travelin' Band," the driving sting of "Up Around The Bend," and the irresistibly sunny fantasia hoedown "Looking Out My Back Door" (complete with tambourines and elephants) each achieved gold status. These tunes hit the mark completely, capturing the group's accessible, hook-laden rock 'n' roll with a lightness and urgency balanced by stinging guitars, unforgettable melodies, and the expressive voice of lead singer/songwriter John Fogerty.
Though COSMO'S FACTORY has its share of covers, including a version of the Sun Records oldie "Oobie Doobie" and an extended jam on the Marvin Gaye classic "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," it still overflows with great originals. "Ramble Tamble" and "Run Through the Jungle" are edgy rockers build around killer guitar riffs, both driven by an uncharacteristically dark, shadowy feel. "Long As I Can See the Light" is full of plaintive yearning, while the poignant "Who'll Stop the Rain" ranks among Fogerty's finest tunes. Creedence's ability to fuse traditional pop elements with downhome simplicity, rock edge, and superb songcraft is in full effect on COSMO'S FACTORY, placing it alongside GREEN RIVER and WILLIE AND THE POOR BOYS as one of their best albums.
Throughout 1969 and ...
| | Creedence Clearwater Revival Pendulum CD (1970) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Digipak
Creedence Clearwater Revival
$8.89 Although not as flawless as 1969's WILLY & THE POOR BOYS or 1970's COSMO'S FACTORY, PENDULUM (also released in '70) certainly has its moments. It may only contain one certified hit single (the chugging, melancholic "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?," one of singer/songwriter John Fogerty's best), but both "(Wish I Could) Hideaway" and "Hey Tonight" have become staples on FM classic rock radio over the years, thanks to Fogerty's memorable melodies and inimitably gritty singing style.
Interestingly, PENDULUM is CCR's most ambitious album, with progressive arrangements, instrumentation (including brass and a vocal choir), and a higher gloss to the production. But Fogerty's songwriting is as solid as ever. The album's bluesy opener, "Pagan Baby," with its great guitar riff and tight ensemble playing, remains one of the band's most underrated ...

$12.95 | | Chris Merkley Thirty Miles From Nashville CD (2009)
Creedence Clearwater Revival
$14.79 Country boy moves to the big city to play music and realizes he can build a tour bus almost as large as his factory loft apartment. Country boy moves back to the country to build a bus…Since becoming a full-time musician in 2001, Chris Merkley has played in the streets and clubs of over a dozen different countries, throughout the course of four European and six American tours. He has played to traffic-stopping crowds on the sidewalks of Paris with his band, The Crooners, as well as to packed, sweaty audiences in the cavernous basements of Prague clubs. In 2005, Merkley left his roots in central New York and moved to Brooklyn to continue his pursuits with The Crooners. Not one for the cement and smog of life in the city, he soon found himself considering alternate approaches to being an independent musician. “I kept drawing sketches of a tour bus, with all the amenities of a home and recording studio, and just couldn’t let go of the notion that I could build something like that to facilitate my music career and improve life on the road at the same time.” Merkley recalls, “I also wanted to make it more environmentally responsible so I started researching vegetable oil conversions and alternate forms of energy production. I figured I could wrap all the aspects of my daily life into a vehicle that served me and the environment at the same time.” So, with no one to deny him that but himself, he began researching the idea of a bus conversion more seriously and decided a retired school bus would be best suited for the project. After a year of searching online, he found the bus he was looking for in the hills of Kentucky and moved back to central New York to begin construction. The process has been slow, but Merkley sees no reason to rush things. He states, “I want to do it right, and incorporate as many of the ideas as possible, so I’m researching each step along the way and working on the construction in between recording albums and touring.” In addition to working on the bus and playing over 100 shows in 2008, Merkley composed five pieces of music for HBO's critically acclaimed series, 'Generation Kill', and made several trips from New York to Tennessee to record his first full-length solo studio album, entitled 'Thirty Miles from Nashville'. Drawing from influences such as Little Walter, Robert Johnson, Led Zeppelin, the Allman Brothers and more modern groups like the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Merkley blends ...
