One of reggaeton's biggest stars, Daddy Yankee returned in 2008 with not only a new album, TALENTO DE BARRIO, but also a film vehicle of the same name. The album (which doubles as the soundtrack to the film) is as impressive a release as one would expect from the superstar. Pulsing with slick beats and epic production, TALENTO DE BARRIO distinguished itself from other reggaeton albums by moving away from the often monotonous stylistic signposts of the genre and allowing for a more diverse sound. "Salgo Pa La Calle" features production from studio aces Luney Tunes and rides skittering synth lines over buoyant beats, while "Suelta" opens with an insistent thump before switching gears into a more traditional reggaeton rhythm. "De La Paz Y de La Guerra," the album's most notable track, drifts the furthest from traditional reggaeton with its distinct meringue vibe. Daddy Yankee delivers on every track and keeps pace with the album's wide-screen feel; in the process he shows the seemingly endless possibilities for a genre once thought to be a creative cul-de-sac. Billed as the soundtrack to the film of the same name, Talento de Barrio is a full-length showcase for Daddy Yankee that is essentially the follow-up album to El Cartel: The Big Boss (2007), a wide-ranging effort that found him experimenting with crossover tactics and collaborating with pop-rap artists including Akon, will.i.am, Fergie, and Scott Storch. Unlike that album, which yielded mixed results, Talento de Barrio doesn't aim to expand Daddy Yankee's fan base; rather, it aims to consolidate his already massive following. There are no English-language songs, no pop-rap collaborations, no Scott Storch productions, nothing even potentially embarrassing -- it's pure reggaetón. Granted, there are some Latin fusions (most effectively, "Llamado de Emergencia" fuses Columbian vallenato with reggaetón) and also some autotuned vocals à la T-Pain (the choruses of "Temblor" and "'Qué Tengo Qué Hacer?"), but Talento de Barrio is clearly a return to Daddy Yankee's strengths as a street-level reggaetónero. This makes Talento de Barrio a less interesting album than El Cartel: The Big Boss, whose broad range of crossover tactics was fascinating even when certain songs didn't work out as well as planned. On the other hand, Talento de Barrio is an all-around better album than El Cartel: The Big Boss. Not only is it more stylistically consistent and more reasonably paced at 15 songs in less than an hour's time; most importantly, it sticks with what's already proven successful. Three highlights in particular exemplify what works best for Daddy Yankee: "Pose" is another in a line of electrifying club tracks ("Gasolina," "Rompe," "Impacto"), "Somos de Calle" is a socially conscious rallying call for the streets, and "Salgo pa' la Calle" is a melodic gem featuring a fantastic hook by Randy (of Jowell & Randy) and a standout production by Luny Tunes and Tainy. ~ Jason Birchmeier Daddy Yankee Talento De Barrio Songs Talento De Barrio Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Very good quality.. this is one of daddy yankee's best album definitly... it has a great sound..powerful beats.. and good production.. my congrats to musicologo and menes (album producers).. this album could change the whole idea about reguetton.. supporting the young captains of reguetton as randy and arcangel with 2 great featurings.. Daddy Yankee at his best If you thought that 'El Cartel: The Big Boss' wasn't nearly as good as 'Barrio Fino', than this is the album for you. With 'Talento De Barrio' Daddy Yankee returns to the sounds that made brought him international fame. The debut track 'Pose', a delightful fusion of reggaetón and electro is already a hit on the Latin charts. Other notable tracks are the energetic 'Pa-Kumpa!!' and the Latin rhythm filed 'De La Paz y De La Guerra' that was co-produced by non other than Latin star Elvis Crespo.
Daddy Yankee shows with 'Talento de Barrio' that he is still an unmatchable force in the reggaeton movement, and at the moment the biggest star in Latin music. Submitted by Diego Granada (Madrid, Madrid, Spain) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 4 of 8 found this helpful.

Talento De Barrio Mundial !!!!!!!! Simply the best reggaeton album of the 08 and 09 era. This is so big internationally this is like where Martin Luther King Jr. left off. It's that big. All the songs are hot and the Pose, Llamado De Emergencia, & Somos De Calle have more than 20 million views in Youtube. Talento De Barrio Mundial is for sure going to be better then this album. Prende El Ritmo No Perdona is proving that. Submitted by goontube (Kerman, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
