Goody EP album
$10.09 When Calle 13 delivered their kooky left hook to the world of reggaeton with their 2005 full-length debut, critics and fans alike took notice. Fun, political, and boldly innovative in a genre full of cookie cutter artists, Calle 13 were the breath of fresh air reggaeton had long needed. The groundbreaking brother team from Puerto Rico continues their journey with 2008's LOS DE ATRAS VIENEN CONMIGO. With a title that translates loosely into "Those left behind are coming with me," Calle 13's sophomore effort takes to task the world of privilege and corporate greed. But the real revolution is in the music, which revels in a postmodern collage of styles including cumbia, reggae, rock, and gypsy music. Guests Café ...
| | Steel Pulse Earth Crisis CD (1984) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Goody EP CD music
$8.85 According to Steel Pulse front man David Hinds, Elektra Records informed the band--just prior to the 1984 recording of EARTH CRISIS--that they wanted the band to sound like then-popular, commercially oriented reggae artist Eddy Grant. Elektra's bid for a mainstream reggae cash-in helps explain the slick, highly polished sound of EARTH CRISIS. The breezy "Steppin' Out" and the bouncing, poppy "Tightrope" (both of which became permanent additions to the band's live repertoire) kick off the set, buttressed by bright synth lines and lush, layered vocal harmonies.
Yet Steel Pulse's particular skill has always been in giving lock-step reggae grooves singable melodies and a smooth, accessible patina. In this way, EARTH CRISIS is one of the band's most emblematic albums, a fact reflected in its great commercial success. Admirably, Steel Pulse maintains their commitment to socially and politically conscious themes here, on the environmentally concerned title track and the self-explanatory "Grab Education," among others. Though it does not match the artistic heights of other Steel Pulse releases, EARTH CRISIS is characterized by strong songs and fine musicianship, and remains one of the band's ...

| | Dread Zeppelin Un-Led-Ed CD (1990)
Goody EP album
$8.85 Despite singer Tortelvis' reputed propensity for gas, there is no denying that, initially, Dread Zeppelin was a breath of fresh air in a stale music scene which oftentimes took itself way too seriously. Anyone jaded enough to think they had seen it all in rock & roll was forced to think again when faced with the band's improbable reggae renditions of Led Zeppelin classics, performed by an overweight caricature of the King himself, the aforementioned Tortelvis. Together, these disparate elements provided an aural and visual cocktail of Spinal Tap proportions -- but in this case, it was all for real. Of course, none of it could possibly have worked had it not been so cleverly well thought out in advance, and then expertly executed. Make no mistake, behind the sextet's comedic façade lies a highly competent group, featuring solid musicianship, great arranging talent, and, face it -- sheer balls and audacity. Having said that, the sextet's first album, 1990s Un-Led-Ed, is a gag-infested tour de force where almost every dubious musical moment is safeguarded by a healthy dose of humor -- and vice versa. Instantly catchy, and often hilarious renditions of such Zeppelin staples as "Black Dog" and "Heartbreaker" (cleverly spliced with "Hound Dog" and "Heartbreak Hotel" for added flavor) are, for the most part, perfectly ...
| | Peter Tosh Bush Doctor CD (1978) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Goody EP CD music
$8.55 Keith Sterling (keyboards); Sly Dunbar (drums, percussion); Larry McDonald, Sticky (percussion).
From his days as one of the original Wailers in the '60s until his violent death at the hands of thieves in 1987, Peter Tosh was one of Jamaican music's most outspoken and controversial artists. Though his former partner Bob Marley never shied away from political or social statements himself, Tosh eschewed Marley's gift for metaphor and parable in favor of such explicitly political slogans as the legendary "Legalize It."
BUSH DOCTOR, widely considered one of Tosh's best solo albums, features the similarly plain-spoken title track, which became one of his signature songs, the seething "Dem Ha Fe Get A Beatin'," and the devotionally Rasta "Soon Come" and "Creation." Other tracks, like "Stand Firm" and "I'm The Toughest," are more general statements of defiance and self-determination but are no less powerful. The music is equally strong and relentless. BUSH DOCTOR is a roots-reggae masterpiece.
As the debut album on the Rolling Stone label in 1978, Bush Doctor benefited immensely from the involvement of Jaggar and Richards, as well ...
