| | Shiverin' & Shakin' CD
Subtitled: Challenge Records Part One: 1958-65. Part One of this Challenge Records series is a 28 track tune stack on the turntable that is 100% solid Rock from the early 60's. It is a mixture of classics and obscurities with the emphasis very much on the rocking, leavened with a few sleazy instros, with at least a half dozen tracks here that haven't been on legitimate CD before. Compiled by Mr. 'Big Beat', Alec Palao, who has personally been in the vaults to seriously scour the Challenge label archives for every gem going. Includes cuts from Bobby Bare, Jerry Arnold, The Champs, The Four Teens and more. RPM.Record Collector (magazine) (p.99) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Instrumental fans will love a couple from The Champs and 'Mogul Monster' by The Rangers: a raw and glorious slab of rock with big drums and needles in the red." Shiverin' & Shakin' album
$17.05 Contains 27 tracks of Australian psychedelic rock originally released on Festival Records.
The Australian pop-psychedelia scene of the late '60s was more akin to the British pop-psych scene than the American one, though it borrowed from both of those cousins. Really, however, it wasn't as distinctive as either, nor did it have many tunes to rate on par with the best of those from the U.K. or U.S. Nonetheless, this 27-track anthology of Oz pop-psych from 1967-1970 does cover a scene that's rarely been noted by rock collectors or historians, particularly outside of Australia. Licensed from the Festival label (with the exception of a couple of tracks from Clarion Records), there aren't any names that will strike instant chords with the international ...
| | Minus 5 I Don't Know Who I Am CD (2003) Let The War Against Music
Shiverin' & Shakin' CD music
$13.85 Although Scott McCaughey pays his bills as a loyal R.E.M. sideman, the longtime Young Fresh Fellows frontman's Minus 5 project has allowed him to explore his fundamental pop/rock leanings with colleague Peter Buck on albums like 2001's acclaimed Let the War Against Music Begin. Recorded in tandem with that set, I Don't Know Who I Am -- a limited-edition disc reportedly restricted to a pressing of just 2,000 copies -- is far darker and more experimental, as evidenced by the set launcher, "There Is No Music." Meshing a slide guitar with a brooding lo-fi feel, the song's alt-country leanings uneasily shift into the electronic-tinged ...
