| | Juno Reactor Beyond The Infinite CD Juno Reactor Discography of CDs
Ben Watkins (the core of Juno Reactor) used to front a vastly underrated and fascinating industrial/experimental troupe called The Empty Quarter. Juno Reactor, however, is the farthest thing from experimentalism. BEYOND THE INFINITE is blast-you-into-outer-space trance, flushed with the rhythmic girth of techno.
Juno Reactor's earlier discs lifted some of the trappings of ambient techno off its hinges, but BEYOND THE INFINITE seeks to set your body shakin' in the farthest reaches of the galaxy. "Ice Cube" melts your woofers in a thunderous river of chilly bass and psychedelic synths. The power-hungry grooves of "Feel the Universe" become a caustic electronic stew that few have stirred before.

| | Bt Escm CD (1997)
Beyond The Infinite
$13.89 Continuing pretty thoroughly in Ima's vein, ESCM is another collection of ambient-progressive electronic music with as much interest in new age blissouts as dancefloor action. This said, ESCM is stronger all around, with a more varied sense of overall rhythm dynamics than the basic build-and-release trance climaxes that were the bread and butter of Ima. Opening track "Firewater" shows this well with its initial rhythm, a shuddering, slightly distorted tribal drum stomp instead of a straight pulse. Swooping synths and ecstatic vocals mix with deep spoken-word vocals about "fire in the sky," and when the main beats kick in, it's shuffling funk that carries the track to even higher and stronger levels. Concluding with acoustic guitar and rough, soulful vocals, it makes for quite a stunning start, signaling the album's greater ambitions and success at delivering the same. While "Orbitus Teranium" sounds like it should be a tribute to the Orb, the crisp drum machine generated breakbeat punch of the track is much more BT's affair, spiked up with sudden stops, interjections, and laser sounds. As the album continues, hints of polite if active drum and bass influences and other recent beat touches crop up on other tracks even as the more familiar techno beats ...
| | Juno Reactor Odyssey 1992-2002 CD (2002) Digipak
Beyond The Infinite
$12.95 This compilation from Metropolis Records will give listeners a glimpse into the history and development of Ben Watkins's music. Watkins has broadened his scope since 2002 to incorporate a myriad of styles into his work. However, this 10-year retrospective focuses on Watkins's seminal recordings, many of which fall neatly into a techno vein.
All 11 selections on ODYSSEY 1992-2002 could be best described as hard-hitting dance tracks. The throbbing, synthetic rhythms of "High Energy Protons" and "Laughing Gas" best epitomize Watkins's earliest recordings. On these tracks, quarter notes pound in the foreground, while spacey keyboard effects swirl and pulsate in the distance. The rock influenced "Masters of the Universe" and the spooky choral arrangement "Hotaka" illustrate Watkins's later recordings, which are more diverse. In general, there is an indefinable mystique to each of these dance ...
| | Juno Reactor Labyrinth CD (2004)
Beyond The Infinite
$12.79 Juno Reactor's 2004 release LABYRINTH infuses trance with heavy-hitting rock, African tribal rhythms, and hints of modern Japanese music (given the inclusion of a taiko drummer). Further, because this recording mixes electronic and acoustic instruments together, a unique musical tableau is created.
LABYRINTH cannot be strictly defined as either techno or dance music. The blending of ethnic percussion with dense, industrial loops and ominous singing casts this album in a unique light. For example, the writhing "Conquistador II" merges together computer-generated rhythms with various highly produced percussion effects and a ghostly vocal performance from Taz Alexander. There is great song variety on this disc too. Hard-edged rockers "Wardogs" and "Giant" are offset by the dreaminess of "Mutant Message" and "Angels and Men." ...

Beyond The Infinite
$13.95 Die-hard metal heads channeling the spirit of their heroes (that would be Hellhammer in this case), or shameless rip-offs making a career out of copying that same legendary and long-dead band's style? That's the main question surrounding Germany's Warhammer, who here present their fourth album of unapologetically retro-early-'80s doom-thrash. Warhammer is not original, nor are they trying to be. But they're clearly doing what they do because they love it, not because it's fashionable (it isn't), ...
