| | Flotsam & Jetsam No Place For Disgrace CD (1988)
Electrify CD music
$7.59 Though they had recently lost lyricist and principal songwriter Jason Newsted to Metallica, Arizona thrashers Flotsam & Jetsam neatly avoided the sophomore slump with 1988's No Place for Disgrace. The album basically repeats the formula of their debut but benefits from a cleaner yet still-in-your face production job. And while Newsted collects a few co-writing credits, guitarist ...

| | Into Eternity Scattering Of Ashes CD (2006) (Import)
Electrify songs
$14.99 That Canadians Into Eternity have forged a consistent and inventive body of work from good old heavy metal's tired old carcass is impressive in itself; that they've done so while experiencing a revolving door membership (that makes referring to them as a "band" something of a stretch) is almost miraculous. As loyal fans know all too well, only guitarist/growler Tim Roth and drummer Jim Austin have been there since the group's inception in 2000, which means that singer Stu Block, who has been the band's on-stage frontman for barely two years, may as well be considered a long-tenured veteran by these guys' standards. 2006's The Scattering of Ashes -- Into Eternity's fourth album all around -- marks his recording debut with the group, and immediately proves that they'd be fools to ever let him go -- the guy is a monster! In fact, Ripper Owens himself would probably agree that Block's vocal tour de force here instantly qualifies as one of the finest metal voices of his generation; as he shouts, soars, shrieks, shatters a whole cabinet's worth of glassware, and just plain sings his ass off with astounding power and control. Although excellence is truly his only option, since it's his unenviable task to match tonsils against Roth's still-frequent use of Cookie Monster growls and his impossibly ...
| | Amon Amarth With Oden On Our Side CD (2006) Bonus CD; Digipak
Electrify album
$11.39 Death metal with some melody? Can it be? As evidenced by Amon Amarth's 2006 release, With Odin on Our Side, this dream seems to be a reality early on. On the album opening "Valhall Awaits Me," singer Johan Hegg's vocal lines aren't merely growled syllables. But don't be worried, longtime Amarth fans, it's not like the Swedish outfit has enlisted the help of Burt Bacharach to soften things up, as Hegg's vocals do resort back to the expected death metal growl soon ...

| | Jack Reilly Live In Poland CD (2002)
Electrify songs
$13.95 The recording quality of Live in Poland, a 1978 solo piano concert from Pozan, Poland, may not be state-of-the-art (it often has an echo), but the playing by Jack Reilly is quite inventive and always holds one's interest. Reilly is expert at building up his improvisations, whether striding on "I Got Rhythm," taking "Giant Steps" as an out-of-tempo ballad, sounding a bit like Lennie Tristano on "Solar" (which is mislabeled "Sonny"), or performing his episodic "Easter Suite" and "Autumn Suite." Although he deserves to be heard in a more optimal studio setting, the joy and creativity of Reilly's playing comes through. ~ Scott Yanow
Live in Poland was recorded in 1978 and just now remastered for cd. It's some of Jack's best playing in concert. The concert hall was in Pozan, in central Poland and it was during the cold war. The tension in the atmosphere must have inspired Jack to attain supreme hights of fancy, uninhibited playing, and improvisatory ecstasy! This cd must be listened to, to believe, the opening work was totally improvised on the spot. It set the tone for all that follows. These are the words of Jack Reilly, composer, jazz pianist and author. As a composer, Mr. Reilly has achieved a remarkable synthesis of traditional classical music with jazz. His compositions and performances reflect his solid musicianship, intelligence and sophistication.Acclaimed for his solo jazz concerts in the United States and in Europe, where he has performed in France, Italy, Poland, Ireland, London, Wales and Norway, Jack Reilly is a vibrant exhilarating performer. The enthusiastic response to Mr. Reilly's European tour with George Russell's New York Band and his subsequent performance with the band at the Village Vanguard in New York City; his concert at Jordan Hall in Boston with the Jack Reilly Trio, where he was given a standing ovation; his recordings and books --- three volumes on jazz improvisation entitled SPECIES BLUES and the nationally accliamed book THE HARMONY OF BILL EVANS confirms the scope of Jack Reilly's talents and versatility.Mr. Reilly has also presented lecture/recitals at numerous schools in North America and in Europe including presentations at the prestigious International Piano Festival and Competition at the University of Maryland. Formerly chairman of the Department of Jazz Studies at the New England Conservatory of Music, he has served on the faculties of the Mannes College of Music, New York University, The New School, The Berklee School of Music, and as chairman of the Jazz Program at La Musica A Villa Scarsella in Diano Marina, Italy.Recordings by Jack Reilly include albums of original material: Blue Sean Green, Tributes, The Brinksman, Masks, Here's What I Like, TZU-JAN Volume 1 and 2,Pure Passion and Live in Poland, on Unichrom CDs.
