Cousins Records presents British Reggae singer Kofi. She first worked with the trio Brown Sugar, which was comprised of Paul Catlin & Soul 2 Soul vocalist Caron Wheeler. It was not long before she recorded her first solo single called "Place In The Sun",
Though not terribly well known in the U.S., Kofi has had a steady trickle of reggae hits in England since the demise of her original group, Brown Sugar, in the 1980s. Most of her hits stem from her work with London producer Mad Professor at his Ariwa studio, which has been ground zero for the "lovers rock" style of reggae since its earliest days. But on Rocking Eternally she teams up with the equally well-regarded production team of Mafia & Fluxy, and although their sound is subtly different from Mad Professor's (most notably in its near absence of crazy dubwise flourishes), they still know how to provide the balance of digital smoothness and warm approachability that a voice like Kofi's needs. And her voice is still just as sweet and sexy as it was 25 years ago: on tracks like the brilliant "Knowing U, Knowing Me" and the particularly bedroomy "Give U Up, Never" she sounds simultaneously worldly and sweetly innocent -- a killer combination. On "Ability to Love," the producers nicely offset rather syrupy strings with an unusually rock-hard rhythm, and "Life Time Thing" is marred only by a painfully out of tune flute. Do all the tracks sound the same? Pretty much, yes, even by reggae's generous standards. But the pleasure of lovers rock is that it all sounds pretty much the same, which means that it's all equally useful for its intended purpose -- and no one sings this style of reggae better than Kofi. ~ Rick Anderson

| | Angie Stone Unexpected CD (2009)
Rocking Eternally music CDs
$13.10 On her second album for Concord's Stax imprint (and fourth overall), Angie Stone delves deeper into funk and hip-hop than on her previous outings. Her last offering, The Art of Love & War, was a critical and commercial triumph for the vastly underrated vocalist, and topped the Billboard chart. With a slew of producers including Sly Williams, Willie "Chuck" Shivers, Karrim King and Fitzroy Reid, Steven "Supe" White, Jonathan Richmond, Jazze Pha, and Stone herself, these dozen tracks continue to reveal her versatility as a vocalist and recording artist; she can sing whatever it is she wants to with equal verve, authenticity, and flair. Despite the slicker and more diverse sounds on Unexpected, the soul quotient is high, even if this isn't strictly a neo-soul album. The new beat consciousness reveals itself most on the title track, ...
| | Z-Ro Cocaine CD (2009)
Rocking Eternally songs
$15.05 Despite his status as one of hip-hop's most prolific artists, Z-Ro never quite spreads himself too thin. The provocatively titled COCAINE is his second release from 2009, and features his trademark self-aware, yet rapier-sharp lyrics over some of the hotter beats out of the fertile Houston scene. The Intro skilfully sets out the landscape as the dark-vocaled MC reflects upon his choice of a life of street dealing without a shred of remorse, while stressing his decision was not exactly the wise one. From there, Z-Ro, an expert storyteller, wanders from tale to tale, each one delivered with a novelist's touch, on a record ...

| | Daptone Gold CD (2009) Digipak
Rocking Eternally CD music
$9.59 The proudly retro Daptone label has seen its popularity rise from humble origins in 2000 to one of the world's most dependable sources of soul and R&B with extensions into gospel and world music. This compilation, released for Christmas 2009, rounds up 22 nuggets from the imprint's decade-long history. Taken as a whole, it makes a convincing case for Daptone having the potential to be the musical, if not the commercial, equivalent of a Stax or Motown of its time -- basically a record company with an identifiable sound. Since a handful of these tracks were only available on 45s, the set is more than just a "best-of" assortment as it unearths rare sides once the province of collectors. ...
