| | Al Jarreau Christmas CD Al Jarreau Discography of CDs
(3 Customer Reviews)
For the past few decades, Al Jarreau has established himself as a truly modern jazz singer, one for the post-fusion generation--those who grew up with the sounds of the cordial contemporary jazz of George Benson, Spyro Gyra, and Herbie Hancock. CHRISTMAS is Jarreau's first-ever collection of holiday songs on which he wraps his supple, honeyed vocal chords around some traditional Christmas classics. Jazz vocal combo Take 6 lend their voices for "I'll Be Home For Christmas" and the considered, varied arrangements of Jay Graydon and Jarreau himself keep the proceedings interesting.

| | Skeeter Davis Pop Hits Collection CD (2003)
Christmas music CDs
$15.15 Recorded between 1962 & 1967. Includes liner notes by Steve Kolanjian.
Skeeter Davis has had two phases of her career: the first as part of the duo, the Davis Sisters, with Betty Jack Davis (they weren't really sisters, by the way) in the pre-rock & roll era, and the second as a solo Nashville country crossover artist in the 1960s. The Davis Sisters recorded one bona fide classic, "I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know," which was a huge hit in 1953, and Skeeter mirrored it with a classic of her own in 1963, the weepy and resigned "The End of the World," which features a perfectly measured vocal from Davis, which manages to overcome the pathos inherent in the lyrics. This collection of solo sides reveals the formula Davis followed pretty clearly, merging plaintive country material with injections of big pop hooks, all sweetened with Nashville strings. Try to pick up a compilation that features a selection of Davis Sisters' songs -- in addition to the solo stuff ...
| | Lynn Anderson Live From The Rose Garden CD (2005) Bonus DVD
Christmas songs
$12.35 There's no recording date information and the general packaging is minimalist, to say the least; but this double-disc set -- one live CD and one DVD containing the video equivalent of the same show -- delivers where it counts, in the music. The sound is such that there's very little audience ambience, but there's plenty of presence for the band and even more so for Lynn Anderson, who is in excellent form throughout. The CD is great, but the DVD is even better, not only with an excellent visual account of the concert from the Renaissance Center in Dixon, TN, but also a nice selection of bonus features -- before and after interviews and other support materials. The camera angles vary sufficiently so that one never feels confined or static watching the show, and the full-screen (1.33-to-1) image is crisp enough to pass for HDTV. The audio is mastered a little low on the DVD but it pumps up well and cleanly, and in other details -- the menu's simplicity, the chapter breaks (one per song, natch) -- the producers get everything right. Equally important, and amazingly, Anderson still gives a great show 40-plus years into her career; and she's got a first-rate band working with her, who really do right by the music and the audience. Anderson and the band rise to the occasion of her first full-length concert video in fine style in the environment, which seems as personally friendly as it is music-friendly. She's ...

| | Harry Connick, Jr What A Night! A Christmas Album CD (2008)
Christmas CD music
$10.39 With his silken, suave, self-assured vocals recalling a cross between Nat "King" Cole and Frank Sinatra, Harry Connick Jr. has a natural voice for celebrating Christmastime. So it's no surprise that with the 2008 holiday season in full swing, Connick returns with his third holiday record, the sprightly WHAT A NIGHT! A CHRISTMAS ALBUM. As it is with his non-Yuletide LPs, WHAT A NIGHT! is a medley of his nimble, elegant takes on time-tested classics and disarming originals. The set opens on Connick's vibrant re-envisioning of "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year," heavy on exotic percussion and redolent of his New Orleans roots, yet based in its original impassioned swing. The title track, a ballad penned by Connick, shimmers with open-fire-roasted chestnuts warmth and collective cheer. Perhaps the most beguiling moment is his gentle, unadorned, unearthly version of the melancholy "I'll Be Home For Christmas," a unique yet unassuming take on the well-traveled tune.

$20.69 | | Heavybreathing Vol. 3, The Sounds Of Sex: Stop It! CD (2007)
Christmas music CDs
$15.25 The third volume in the highly entertaining HEAVYbreathing series is, according to the liner notes, a study in "the artificial world of digital eroticism," as conflated with the effects of the sexual revolution. Theory is as does, but the end result is certainly enjoyable, focusing heavily but not exclusively on more recent efforts from various dance and electronic acts. This said, the compilation begins with James White & the Blacks' "Stained Sheets," with White's sax skronk and the film noir beat calling to mind even earlier times of sleaze as Lydia Lunch and White enact an increasingly involved phone conversation. Elsewhere, older efforts include Twink's dramatic psych bad trip "Fluid," which makes a good case for his cult following to this day. More recent inclusions take on board a variety of unsurprising contributors -- Chris & Cosey have things (or rather gasps) to say on "Infectus," while Khan's gentle music supporting thoroughly raunchy words on "12th Commandment" and Kevin Blechdom and Mocky's grinding crunch/emotionally wound-up rant combination on "Love You from the Heart" are also standouts. But it's the unexpected or rarer delights that help the compilation stand out, including the moving, minimal closer, "Still" by Inuit singer Tagaq, the Stereo MC's' brief but powerful "Stop It! Stop It! Stop It!," and Japanese act Love T.K.O.'s swank '70s sleaze music retrofit "Love Thong." Some songs seem to be present more by implication than for any overriding or sonic thematic reason (and to the compilers' credit, this much is said in the detailed liner notes), but in doing so they make the case for broader assumptions about what constitutes sexually charged music. ...
| | Mainline Placebo CD (2006)
Christmas songs
$12.59 Since 1999 Mainline has developed their unique blend of Southern California styles to bring you their latest work Notice of Disconnection 2006. For those who crave organization we would call our genre new school Southern California melodic rock metal tech punk or Mainline for short. We do what we want.We started in the living room of a townhouse in Hemet, CA shaking our neighbor's pictures off her wall. Back then it was Bryan, Jeff and myself (Mike). Before then Bryan and Ciamak had been in a couple of different bands together and Jeff had been jamming in bands for about eight years. I was the only person with zero experience; just a few books full of lyrics and an acute inability to sing in key. So we continued jamming and sticking beer bottle caps into the stucco. Later we added Ciamak in 2000 and went into Park Hill Studio in Hemet to record our first album. Parkhill was a studio which was way too nice for a fledgling band such as ourselves and an inexperienced singer such as me but it was a great learning experience and helped us learn about real studio recording. We left the studio with ten songs that we never released except to some friends; it was called Dead Before We Die. A few of those songs ended up rerecorded on the 2003 release of Placebo. Placebo was recorded at Studio Nine (then Pamona, now Ontario) by Darrell. Placebo received some nation wide college radio play and was put on the Never Lift Off Road video (30,000 copies in the first run) and on a Throttle music compilation (3000 copies). A year or so after we released Placebo we added Jesse Montano to the band. Jesse had played in a couple of bands with Bryan a few years earlier and fit right in. With the new guitarist we locked ourselves away in our practice room and practiced four nights a week for about two years before going to record our next album Notice of Disconnection. We took our time on this our third recording. Notice of Disconnection was recorded at Sound Sanctuary in Riverside by Phil. Currently we are shopping these independent releases to achieve national distribution/tour support/studio time. Now it's a matter of getting our new music heard while we work on our next album, rock some shows and find a way to quit our day jobs to jam!So that is who we are and what we're about is doing ...

| | Dead Jettsons What Future? EP CD (2008)
Christmas CD music
$10.15 "What works for the snowy trio can be found in the opener to their EP, 'Sally Looks Like God.' What begins is an echo-laden guitar bellowing a buildup in which drummer Charlie Henschen's hypnotic trance beat and Daniel Sheron's ferocius guitar clash together like two titans sharing a six-pack. The tones and drums remind me of an early Nirvana/Silverchair combination meeting The Faint. The dance grooves are there, courtesy of bass player Charlie Freundlich's ...
| | Joe Chambers New World CD (1976)
Christmas music CDs
$12.19 Perhaps the most underrated drummer in the pantheon of Blue Note Records, Joe Chambers is also one of the most versatile and forward-looking. Chambers excels in hard bop, avant-garde, soul-jazz, and fusion contexts, and NEW WORLD is proof positive of that fact. Recorded in 1976 and given its CD debut, WORLD draws together all those strands (as well as Latin rhythms). Chambers's playing is the nigh-on-perfect balance of dynamism and subtlety, and WORLD features lively ensemble work throughout.
An excellent recording, his second as a leader, made ...
