Arguably the most vibrant and verbose lyricist out of the Wu, the Gza returns with his extraordinary fifth solo album, PRO TOOLS. Rather than recycling the winning formula of LIQUID SWORDS, the Genius and Co. have updated their attack strategy. The trademark Shaolin soul loops are still there, along with dramatic orchestral arrangements, but the Gza's flow is even more elevated than usual; with old-school cadences, his tone is laidback slick even while the rhymes paint incredibly vivid street narratives. The emphasis is on good old-fashioned storytelling here, as the man who penned such classics as "Labels" and "Publicity" mixes superb extended metaphors ("0% Finance," "Short Race") with multiple cautionary hood tales ("Path of Destruction," "Colombian Ties"). Still, the most intriguing cut might be "Paper Plate"--a subtle but relentless dis-track aimed squarely at 50 Cent. Ironically, the post-Wu era has also brought the Gza back to his low-budget roots with grimy basement beats courtesy of Bronze Nazareth, Dreddy Kruger, Mathematics, True Master, and the Rza. PRO TOOLS is a worthy challenge to Ghostface for the crown of hottest Wu Tang alum.
The Gza's outstanding fourth solo LP returns in instrumental form for dedicated beatheads and upstart MCs looking for tracks to rock over. THE PRO TOOLS INSTRUMENTALS is ideal for both, with production work that veers between head-nodding funk and finely crafted soft soul-based hip-hop. I was lookin' for a Wu Banga on this album. There's not a cut on here I really consider a Wu Banga. Gza is my man and I know he can spit that raw uncut material. The 50 diss is hard, and the Elastic Audio track is ok.

Monotone Beats, Monotone Flow
This album is a sleeper, litteraly...
The album is the most monotone sounding album I ever heard, the flow of GZA is almost robotic and the beats rarely changes in sorts of melody and such.
And why name the album PRO TOOLS, It gives a whole new meaning to product-placements.
The album reminds me of that cartoon FERDINAND about that bull who only wanted to smell the flowers, you feel like that matador shouting at the bull to react, get mad or just do something!
When the album is through you will have experienced nothing.

This album is good. It lacks spontaneity and improvisation. It seems overly organized and too systematic. So basically it is a great album, but it is a bit stiff and monotone. In my opinion if more enthusiasm was included and fuller beats (not so flat) it would be really amazing, but instead it's just good.
So the lyrics are great the beats are great, but the tone is flat. Average album from the GZA.

 Good old GZA
This cd has the older wu sound. Thats what I like about it. It is worth picking up if you like the wu.
