(1 Customer Review)
One of the greatest movie composers is the late Henry Mancini, whose works adorn four decades' worth (from the '50s through the '80s) of good to great films. Jazz saxophonist Ted Nash, whose father Dick and uncle Ted frequently worked with Mancini, has now fashioned an exemplary tribute to him called, fittingly enough, THE MANCINI PROJECT. (While not strictly speaking a jazz composer, Mancini drew upon jazz for inspiration and featured several fine jazz soloists.) Here, the younger Nash has arranged 14 Mancini gems for small group, featuring his poised flute and fine, hearty, occasionally breathy tenor sax. Above all, Nash clearly loves the Hollywood composer's melodies, such as the sleek "Dreamsville" from PETER GUNN and the little heard "Two For The Road," and gives them respectful but also creative and exhilarating interpretations.
Personnel: Ted Nash (alto flute, piccolo); Frank Kinbrough, Frank Kimbrough (piano); Rufus Reid (upright bass); Matt Wilson (drums).
Recording information: Maggie's Farm, Buck's County, PA (12/18/2007/12/19/2007).
JazzTimes (p.70) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "'Breakfast At Tiffany's,' with its soft, mid-tempo four-four bed, provokes some nice, low-key probings, while 'The Party' has a light but funky rigidity that he manages to loosen up a bit." JazzTimes (p.92) - "Nash's rhythms section is exemplary....The chameleonic Nash brings more than Trane's sound to the table when he concentrates on tenor. In the trio format, you may hear echoes of Sonny Rollins in 'Breakfast at Tiffany's'..." Ted Nash Mancini Project Songs | 1. | Theme from Night Visitor |

Mancini Project album
$13.49 This exceptional date by Dave Holland Big Band was recorded in 2002 in New York, yet remained unreleased until 2005. As is to be expected, Holland assembled a fine cast of seasoned and young players, some of whom are veterans of Holland's quintets and quartets. These are four saxophones -- two alto, tenor and baritone -- three trumpets and trombones, and vibes as well as bass and drums. They include Chris Potter and Robin and Duane Eubanks, Antonio Hart, Steve Nelson, Josh Roseman, Billy Kilson, Taylor Haskins, Gary Smulyan, Jonathan Arons and Alex Sipiagin. The music centers around the opening four-part "Monterey Suite," a tour de force commissioned by the Monterey Jazz Festival and originally performed there in 2001. Holland's writing for the trombone section is dynamite. Roseman, Arons, and Robin Eubanks offer up solid bottom rung lines and tight timing as anchors for the rest of the brass though they often ...

| | Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
Mancini Project music CDs
$12.89 On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, features the composer/pianist's typically brilliant, idiosyncratic playing, while Coltrane floats over the top in the most lyrical of modes. Monk, in particular, ...

| | Charlie Haden Not In Our Name CD (2005)
Mancini Project album
$15.35 Pianist Carla Bley is the only returning member of the original LMO. As before, she proves to be a triple threat with her dexterous playing, intuitive conducting, and inventive arrangements. Haden, of course, anchors these tunes (which include his own eclectic title track and a soulful rendition of "Amazing Grace") with his formidable--though never flashy--bass work, allowing the other musicians, particularly guitarist Steve Cardenas and trombonist Curtis Fowlkes, to shine. This is big-band music that can shift with ease from avant-garde passages to swinging melodies, and the talent on hand adds weight to the underlying messages. Although it's difficult to express political outrage with jazz instrumentals, the LMO does exactly that on NOT IN OUR NAME, conveying ...
