In 1607, three ships sailed across the Atlantic to the shores of what became known as Jamestown, Virginia. The arrival of these Europeans changed forever the history of the native people already living peacefully in this fertile country. Writer-director Terrence Malick, who has been waiting 25 years to tell this story, finally gets his chance in the breathtaking epic THE NEW WORLD. Colin Farrell stars as Captain John Smith, a British mutineer facing execution who finds a new purpose--and a dangerous love--in this new land. Smith falls for the young and beautiful Pocahontas (Q'Orianka Kilcher, in her first major role), daughter of the Indian chief Powhatan (August Schellenberg), laying the groundwork for trouble ahead. The Indians are both fascinated and frightened of the Europeans, not sure whether they are friend or foe. Suspicion, desire, greed, lust, and power soon combine to make them mortal enemies. Using natural lighting, carefully reconstructed forts (James Fort) and villages (Werowocomoco), realistic weaponry, fabulous makeup and costumes, and even a re-creation of the Algonquin language, Malick has made a majestic historical drama that transports viewers back to early 17th century America. Supplemented by James Horner's (BRAVEHEART, TITANIC) lush, percussion-based score and Emmanuel Lubezki's gorgeous photography--especially of night scenes on the river--THE NEW WORLD is a compelling examination of the very beginning of American history, told by a master filmmaker who has made just three previous, highly regarded films (BADLANDS, DAYS OF HEAVEN, THE THIN RED LINE) since 1973.

Theatrical Release: December 25, 2005

New World Reviews:

4 stars out of 4 -- "Malick has turned familiar textbook history into vivid historical fiction and brilliant cinema, and THE NEW WORLD is arguably his best film -- accessible, poetic, complex, and profoundly spiritual." -- Howard Karren, Premiere

"[The DVD] exhibits a hazy, slightly desaturated picture that nicely complements the atmospheric tale of exploration and star-crossed lovers....James Horner's beautiful score is mixed well." -- Widescreen Review Staff, Widescreen Review

3 stars out of 5 -- "Malick sweeps us dreamily through the Virginian countryside..." -- Jonathan Dean, Total Film

"[Malick] neither strives for verisimilitude nor spectacle but for an alchemic blend of both -- life in all its power as it is experienced by sentient, sensitive beings."-- Carina Chocano, Los Angeles Times

"Many have tried, but none can match Malick's touch for shuffling a deck of elegiac images and fanning out the hand to express what speech cannot." -- Grade: A- -- Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

"Shot almost entirely in natural light with a moving camera, the film is at once lively and meditative....It mixes carefully researched ethnographic detail with wildly romantic imagining." -- Amy Taubin, Sight and Sound

"[R]apturously beautiful....The entire meaning of the film is conveyed in a single sublime edit that joins a shot of the grubby settlement as it looks from outside its walls -- and framed inside an open door -- with its mirror image." -- Manohla Dargis, New York Times

5 stars out of 5 -- "[I]t's a brilliantly executed blend of western, historical drama and anthropological reconstruction....Lubezki's luscious camerawork, the stirring use of Wagner and the unusually direct but expressive acting succeed in working their wondrous magic." -- Geoff Andrew, Uncut

3 stars Action speaks louder than words!
The New World was a visually beautiful movie to watch. The cinematography was the outstanding feature of this movie. The dialogue was sporadic, relying rather on emotion and sensitivity to carry the plot. I believe the story of Jamestown would be better told through the medium of the documentary. I would purchase it for its historical value.

5 stars Splendid
I have never seen a film with so much emotion as this beautiful creation. The film utilizes little dialogue and narration in the storytelling, relying on the visuals and the body language of the actors to convey the story. It is a wonderful pleasure, but Malick's style is not for everyone, particularly for those who need to have everything spelled out for them.

1 star No wonder this movie bombed at the box office
When I saw the previews for this movie a few months before it came out I thought that this would be one of the best movies of the year.Boy was I wrong. The movie opens up with John Smith(quietly played by Colin Farrell)about to be hanged for a crime that we never hear anything about. He is saved and spends most of the movie wandering the forest and interacting with the Native Americans.Pocahontas, who is played by Q'Orianka Kilcher(an inexperienced actress who looks the part),comes in and catches the eye of Smith. The romance between Pocahontas and Smith is portrayed as a child-like romance for the two instead of what history suggests as a real love relationship.Performances by Christian Bale and Christopher Plummer are just as sustained as the two leads'.The musical score does'nt fit with the film's period. The nagging narration and dizzying cinematography remind me alot of Terrence Malick's other film,The Thin Red Line.Malick's style of film-making is unique, but it does'nt fit in with epics. This movie would've been so much better if it were made by Ron Howard or Steven Spieldberg.I hope Terrence Malick does'nt make another epic.

The grisly and debauched film PATHOLOGY is a juiced-up medical thriller that plays like FLATLINERS with a mean streak and a broken moral compass. Writers Mark Nelvedine and Brian Taylor have created a premise allowing for CSI-like forensics along with heaps of sex and violence, truly making the most of the film's R-rating. A high-end exploitation film with good performances, PATHOLOGY is strong enough for horror fans and should go down smoothly for non-squeamish viewers with a taste for the dark side. Gifted med student Ted Grey (Milo Ventimiglia, HEROES) arrives at a major Washington, D.C., as an intern, where he is met with suspicion and resentment by the tightly knit group of fellow young pathologists-in-training. Soon, though, Ted is accepted into their circle---where they each take turns committing a murder so that the others may prove their mettle by figuring out the cause of death and celebrate with drug-fueled orgies among the dead bodies in the hospital. Things change for Ted, though, when his law student fiancée, Gwen (Alyssa Milano), moves to the city and helps to scare him straight. Soon, crazed Wallace Stevens-quoting leader Jake Gallo (Michael Weston) turns on Ted, putting both Ted's and Gwen's lives in serious jeopardy. The film opens with the Hippocratic Oath, and it's easy to tell that PATHOLOGY is going to show us doctors behaving badly, and the film is in fact almost gleefully immoral, with an attractive young cast that engages in almost any kind of forbidden behavior ...

Marcel Langenegger makes his feature-film directorial debut with the aptly titled DECEPTION, a film about secrets and lies. Jonathan McQuarry (Ewan McGregor) feels that life is passing him by. He completes short-term audits for a large firm, but doesn't really feel any connection to his employer and finds it difficult to make friends at his assignments since he's never there for long. Jonathan's circumstances change overnight when charming lawyer Wyatt Bose (Hugh Jackman) befriends him. In an instant, the shy accountant is playing doubles tennis with his new friend and beautiful women and visiting upscale clubs. Just as mild-mannered Jonathan is getting used to his new lifestyle, Wyatt leaves town on business. When Jonathan finds himself mistakenly in possession of Wyatt's cell phone, he also discovers a whole new world of anonymous sex in elite Manhattan hotels with powerful women known simply as "The List." But soon Jonathan is in over his head: he's the prime suspect when a woman goes missing, and the threat of extortion looms. This tale weaves an intricate web of lies and treachery. Jackman is both charming and chilling as Wyatt, a man utterly without conscience, while McGregor falls easily into character as the bespectacled Everyman, Jonathan. Nerdy but likable, Jonathan really just wants ...

GLORY recounts the bravery of a group of Civil War soldiers often overlooked by history--the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts, a troop of free black men who fought to help win liberty for their enslaved brothers. Based on the historical novels ONE GALLANT RUSH by Peter Burchand and LAY THIS LAUREL by Lincoln Kirstein and the letters of Robert Gould Shaw, the film follows the youthful Colonel Shaw (Matthew Broderick) as he takes responsibility for readying these soldiers for battle. Shaw, a privileged young Boston Brahman, finds the job harder than expected because many of the men balk at taking orders from him. Private Trip (Denzel Washington) is especially resistant to Shaw's leadership, but over time the two come to an understanding as they endure the hardships of the war. On July 18, 1863, Shaw volunteers the 54th for the honor of leading the charge against Ft. Wagner, a mission that means almost certain ...
