Michel Pignolet De Montéclair: Les Ramages - Flute Music They fill the air at arts festivals, at outdoor malls, and even in the confines of an office elevator. They are the euphonic and mellifluous sounds of Andean panpipe and drum ensembles. Whether these sounds are performed by a live band or taken from a CD, the often-stylized tunes are usually pleasing and harmonious, savory, and melodic. Unlike these easily digestible Andean tunes presented for the delicate ears of North America's status quo, the songs on Bolivia: Music of the Calcha can be multiphonic, dissonant, rhythmically complex, based upon unfamiliar musical aesthetics, and full of lyrics that interpret politics and society. Their melodies flow from a variety of wind instruments (aereophones). The larin (a horn made out of rubber tubing), jant'arki (a wooden flute with no tuning holes), saripalka and malichu flutes, primera and segunda panpipes, and trumpet are among the aereophones heard on this CD. A number of drums (membranophones), a lesser number of stringed instruments (chordophones), and a rich variety of vocal lines are also featured in the many Calcha musical genres and song forms presented here. (The Calcha have more than 20 kinds of music, a fraction of which are on this CD.) In summary, the music on Bolivia: Music of the Calcha reflects the long, proud, and unfortunately tumultuous history of the Quechua-speaking Calcha. These are a people whose pre-Columbian roots are thought to stretch back to the Chicha chieftains, and whose present reality has been largely marginalized and threatened by a dominant Bolivian society and a number of evangelical Christian sects (the latter having equated Calcha religious music with "expressions of the devil"). Though the music of the Calcha may not be a strong as it once was, exchanging songs with others outside of their traditional community, such as is being done on this CD, may help to preserve the music of the Calcha and, perhaps more importantly, give it a context for future creative development. ~ John Vallier Includes liner notes by Rosalia Martinez. The 19 songs on Bolivia: Music of the Calcha were recorded in 1996 and 1998, 120 kilometers southeast of Potosí, Bolivia, in the valley of the Calcha. These recordings, along with text and photos in the CD's accompanying booklet, were collected by Rosalía Martinez with the permission of Calcha authorities and musicians. Rosalía Martinez should be commended for her scrupulous fieldwork ethics in general and the credit -- by name -- that she gives to many of the Calcha singers and musicians.

Featuring works by Mendelssohn and Rachmaninoff, the performance is taken from a live concert and includes tracks with oral commentary about the music. Accompanying the CD is a booklet with interpretative paintings for three of the musical selections. I really enjoyed your playing, and the visual images in the booklet while listening.
