Basie Reunion + For Basie CD music
$14.95 Many people think of smooth jazz as something that didn't start until the 1980s, but arguably, smooth jazz started around 1966-1968 with the overtly commercial, pop-drenched albums that guitarist Wes Montgomery recorded during the last few years of his life. Love it or hate it, Montgomery's more commercial output had a major impact on Peter White and many other guitarists who have contributed to smooth jazz (including George Benson, Lee Ritenour, Earl Klugh, Chuck Loeb, and Henry Johnson). Musically, a lot has changed since the '60s, but the more things change in music, the more they inevitably stay the same -- and 2009 found White (like Montgomery 41, 42, and 43 years earlier) still struggling with a desire to improvise and a desire for mass acceptance (the thing that jazz, for the most part, lost after World War ...

Basie Reunion + For Basie album
$10.75 The history of this group dates back to the Spring of 1980 when Margaret, Kris and Dale first sang together at a pickin' party. There was an immediate feeling of "kinship" in the music that they shared. They soon joined forces with world champion fiddler, Frazier Moss, who taught them the spirit in which this music should be played and enjoyed. In 1982 Margaret, Kris and Dale performed as a trio, and later with Frazier Moss at the Folklife Festival Exhibition during the World's Fair in Knoxville, Tennessee. In 1984 Kris and Dale performed with fiddler Junior Daughtery at Carnegie Hall as part of a special American Folk Roots Concert Series. In 1986 Kris and Margaret's vocal harmony came together to "swing" with Vassar Clements' Hillbilly Jazz Band. They sang on two of the group's albums and toured the country. The group performed on The Nashville Network television shows "Nashville Now" and "New Country". Margaret's ...

| | Sursiks Christmas In March CD (2008)
Basie Reunion + For Basie songs
$15.19 "The Sursiks" are 3-7 classically trained, experimental-rock-band-seasoned musicians who delight in transforming non-musical material into music. For their debut release "I didn't know I was singing, vol. 1" (2006) they mirrored the rhythms and pitches of spoken voices from real answering machine messages with instruments and singing to create 16 mind-blowing songs. Their 2nd cd "Lydia Grace" (2007) employed the same methods with the improvised speeches of a 3 year old girl. The Sursiks' ability to transform completely improvised speech into catchy, danceable, elegant and fiercely interesting songs is nothing short of sonic alchemy. The arrangements include flute, bass clarinet, trumpet, saxes, trombone, violins, drums, marimba, xylophone, bass, guitars, piano, organ as well as some home-made instruments. The Sursiks' 3rd cd, "Christmas in March", uses found recordings from tv (shows, commercials, infomercials, news), radio (dj banter, news, weather, interviews), self-help and self-hypnosis recordings, children's lps, religious recordings, political speeches, stand-up comedy routines and more as the source material for its songs. The original recordings are taken apart and re-arranged in order to create new absurd, funny and bitingly satirical narratives which creatively reflect on the very material from which they're made. But then, The Sursiks take it one step further: The spoken parts are rhythmically and melodically ...
