Was 1992 als Gospel-Jugendgruppe begann, ist heute eine ausgewachsene Band von acht Mitgliedern mit vielseitigem Stil von Pop über Rock bis Funk in Englisch und Berndeutsch. Bis auf zwei Ausnahmen besteht das ganze musikalische Repertoire aus Eigenkompositionen, die jedermann/frau mit Sicherheit begeistern werden.Es ist nun schon mehr als 10 Jahre her, seit sich ein paar junge Christen mit einer etwas kühnen Idee im Kopf zusammentaten: Sie wollten am «Stedtlifest» in Nidau ein kleines Konzert geben. Also begannen sie die alten, wohlbekannten Gospellieder zu üben. Sie benutzten dazu nichts anderes als ihre Stimmen und zwei akustische Gitarren. Nun, das Konzert fand tatsächlich statt und da sowohl das Publikum wie auch die Darbietenden begeistert waren, beschloss Living G, die Sache weiterzuführen.Living G hat heute nicht mehr sehr viel mit den Anfängen zu tun. Sänger und Musiker kamen und gingen, und aus der einfachen Gitarrenbegleitung ist eine ausgewachsene Band geworden. Das aktuelle Programm von Living G. präsentiert sich sehr vielseitig. Es reicht vom traditionellen Gospel bis hin zu rockigen Eigenkompositionen. Geblieben ist aber die Freude am Musizieren. It's an event when Iverson Minter (aka Louisiana Red) puts out a recording, but even rarer a date that has Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, an exceptional blues drummer, wailin' on the harmonica! Add bassist Willie Kent, keyboardist Allen Batts, drummer Dave Jefferson, and second guitarist Brian Bisesi for an excellent blues crew. In the middle is Red's gruff vocal and simple, loping guitar, the catalyst for the fireworks on this authentic roots and contemporary Chicago-style blues CD. These are mostly personal songs, reflecting the tragedy and sorrow of Red's childhood, and the injustice of the current world we live in. The first piece, "Red's Vision," speaks of the President's impeachment, churches burning, and memories of Muddy Waters and Lightnin' Hopkins. "That Detroit Thing" recalls his time in the Motor City. "Arlene Blues" asks "what kinda gal are you?" Then you have good-time tunes like "Let Me Be Your Electrician" so "I can turn your power on." There are three instrumentals, the easygoing swing of "Red's Jazz Groove," the "Killin' Floor"-like "Texas Jump," and the Muddy Waters ramblin' rock of the title track. On his fourth album, ex-Squirrel Nut Zippers founder Mathus continues to mine the dirty, swampy blues-rock that he has been mired in throughout his solo career. Recording at his own Clarksdale, MS-based Delta Recording Service studio, Mathus kept the sound stripped down but full. He even goes acoustic on a few tracks, in particular the Stonesy "Loose Diamonds," an Exile on Main St.-styled tune augmented by a small but effective horn section. Rather than keep the same backing unit for each track, Mathus lists over a dozen musicians who contribute to the album, but frustratingly does not specify what song each played on. The sound thumps and pumps along as Mathus rides on scuzzy riffs such as the grimy rocking of "Be That Way" and the opening "Crazy Bout You." He keeps his guitar solos as ragged as the music, creating a mood that boogies along at its own pace. The vibe shifts into early Allman Brothers Band mode on "Rolling Like a Log," a slab of Southern funk driven by organ, nasty slide guitar, and a "Whipping Post" intensity that works despite the obvious ABB influence. Bubbling congas, backing female vocals, and Mathus' low-key singing propel the soulful ballad "Hypnotized." Those elements add a mysterious and slightly dangerous texture to the song. The various percussion instruments include Buddhists gongs, Turkish cymbals, coiled and beaten, a semi-precious antique cymbal with some gold, Chinese cymbal, brass horse bells, Swiss cow bells, and everyday objects made of differing kinds of metals such as cast iron frying pans and a straight edge ruler.
