GUARANTEED TO SATISFY, as the title suggests, is aimed directly at the Derailers' longtime fans. Twelve tracks' worth of twangy country rock ranging from the Flamin' Groovies-like British Invasion cops of the title track to the Everly Brothers-style sweet harmonies and chiming guitars of "I'm Still Missing You," GUARANTEED TO SATISFY is triangulated between vintage rockabilly, classic power pop, and modern alt-country. Highlights include the dramatic, Johnny Cash-like story song "Blood Of A Man" and the Beatlesque shimmer of "The Get Go," which even features a lead guitar hook that strongly recalls George Harrison's part on "If I Needed Someone." Joyous, playful and unapologetically derivative in the best possible way, GUARANTEED TO SATISFY is a low-key gem.

Growing up among Afro-Americans in Berkeley, CA, Greek-American Johnny Otis (born John Veliotes) always identified strongly with people of color. Before he had attained the age of 20 he was gigging with black jazz bands throughout the Southwest, and eventually organized an ensemble deliberately patterned after Count Basie's orchestra. This highly charged album of historical musical artifacts documents the very beginning of Johnny Otis' recording career. With one apparently unobtainable exception, the Classics Blues & Rhythm Series has assembled all of Otis' Excelsior recordings, made in Los Angeles between 1945 and 1947. Hank Snow often misses out when the greatest country & western singers of all time are surveyed, but he was certainly one of the best. A Canadian transplant, he understood the desolate life of the Southwest deeply, and evoked it perfectly. (Even though he grew up in Nova Scotia, he spent most of his adolescence on a fishing boat.) His deep, steady warble resisted most attempts at crossover, but he used it perfectly; it's no coincidence that Willie Nelson, who often phrased closer to blues or jazz than country, loved him and recorded a full album with Snow in 1985. Bear Family has surveyed Snow's studio career over a series of box sets -- including no less than 20 discs just for the American-based, major-label recordings that began in 1950 with his hit "I'm Movin' On" -- but they also offered a series of four thematic compilations in 2008 for those who want a steady middle ground (more music than the hits compilations offer, but less than the completist route). In total, they serve as a good portrait of Snow's great career, although they bypass the straight country and honky tonk material he did so well.
