Throughout his multi-decade career, George Duke has accompanied such luminaries as Frank Zappa and Jean-Luc Ponty, he's shone brightly on both acoustic and electric keyboards, and he's led or co-led cutting-edge and funky fusion bands. Without coming across as overtly old-school, DUKEY TREATS finds Duke revisiting assorted styles and approaches that helped make him a bestselling and enduring performer. Some tracks are fluid fusion jazz that highlight skillful musicianship; others pay clever but heartfelt homage to the creative soul and funk of Marvin Gaye, Prince, and the Gap Band. Vocals guests Jonathan Butler and Teena Marie help make this a set of tasty TREATS.

Down Beat (p.69) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "It's great to hear producer extraordinaire George Duke bust out with the soul music he apparently grew up loving -- and with some social punch, as well." JazzTimes (p.75) - "'Listen Baby' is a time-capsule R&B ballad straight from the '70s showcasing Duke's falsetto, and 'Right on Time' matches it in style but with Rachelle Ferrell's sweet soul matching Duke's for intensity." | Dukey Treats Music Review Purchase Dukey Treats CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Steve Oliver 3-D CD (2004)
Dukey Treats album
$14.65 As one reviewer said of the cheerful music and personality of this increasingly popular voice of smooth jazz guitar, it's Disneyland all the time with him. In other words, Positive Energy, the name of his second genre disc, wasn't just a happy marketing tool. And the title of this disc is appropriate, too, because with the co-production help of founding Spyro Gyra keyboardist Tom Schuman, Oliver digs deep into a rich variety of influences for a multifaceted romp through the worlds of pop, jazz, urban/hip-hop, worldbeat, Brazilian, and Latin music. While focusing as always on his classic acoustic guitar and brilliant "vocalese" to convey the lead melodies on the instrumentals, he stretches into edgier blues territory with his lesser-heard electric on "In the Shade of Cool." Joining all-star guests like Fourplay drummer Harvey Mason (who adds his gentle rhythmic touch to the lush romantic atmospheres of the title track) and saxophonist Eric Marienthal (soulful harmony on the lilting ballad ...
| | Boney James Pure CD (2004)
Dukey Treats CD music
$9.59 Nine albums into his career, Boney James makes a grab for the smooth-jazz crown with PURE, an outing that finds him working with a mix of soul and jazz luminaries. James ups the stakes by taking over the production reins (in addition to co-writing every song). Still front and center with his beloved tenor saxophone, this Grammy-nominated artist shifts to soprano sax for the harmony-soaked Bilal duet "Better with Time" and the silk sheets-and-champagne slow jam "Break of Dawn," featuring up-and-coming Detroit crooner Dwele.
Debi Nova adds her lovely vocals to the beat-driven "Appreciate," a cut that wouldn't sound out of place on a Toni Braxton or Brandy album. Instrumentals are still the focus, however, as revealed on the light funk of "Here She Comes" and the snappy "Stone Groove" (featuring Crusaders keyboardist Joe Sample). Most impressive of all, the languid closing number, ...
| | Jeff Kashiwa Peace Of Mind CD (2004)
Dukey Treats music CDs
$12.39 Jeff Kashiwa has a fluent if generic style on soprano, alto, and tenor, which fits perfectly into the "feel good" smooth music that he performs on "Peace of Mind." The 11 selections clock in between 3:46 and 5:14 and were clearly recorded with hopes of getting maximum radio airplay. Kashiwa's rhythm section is effective if anonymous (despite the presence of Brian Bromberg on bass) with the focus being almost entirely ...

| | Brian Culbertson Bringing Back The Funk CD (2008)
Dukey Treats album
$11.65 The music of light jazz superstar Brian Culbertson is more likely to be associated with candlelit dinners and walks on the beach than shaking one's tailfeather on the dance floor, but BRINGING BACK THE FUNK aims to change all that. With help from a veritable who's who of funk luminaries, including Maceo Parker, Bootsy Collins, Fred Wesley, Bernie Worrell, and Sharon Jones, among others, the trombonist/keyboardist/composer lays down some serious grooves on tracks like "Funkin' Like My Father," "Hollywood Swinging," and "You Got to Funkatize." There is enough of a smooth sheen here to satisfy Culbertson's old fans, but enough funk punch to keep things bouncing.
