This is, perhaps, the one. Derek Trucks has been on an aesthetic quest for something since he began his own recording career in 1997 -- apart from his membership in the Allman Brothers Band. Each record has gone further into establishing Trucks not only as a slide guitar wizard (that happened when he was still in his teens), but also as a serious songwriter, fine arranger, and bandleader. In his brief liner essay, Kim Simmonds -- whose name is synonymous with Savoy Brown, having founded the group and been its only constant member -- says that this record is a return to basics without artifice, gimmicks, or varnish. OK. Fair enough. But if this is back to the raw blues for Simmonds and company on his millionth album, then why does it sound so polished? Steel's sound is very clean, and its approach to songs is, too -- the Lowell Fulsom tune "Monday Morning Blues" that opens the set is all but unrecognizable, having had all of its tough R&B and soul taken away to create a guitar wanker's trio approach. There's plenty of wah-wah, speaking of no artifice. Savoy's rumbling slide guitar craziness of old is back on Simmonds' boogie "Long as I've Got You," with its stinging slide guitar and plenty of amplifier distortion. Great blues and traditional roots rock, harkening back to the originators of the style, this is an excellent disc. Between minimalist country ballad, alternate rock and tortured blues, with a caressing or sliding guitar, acoustic or plugged in, the songwriter Jeremiah Samartano, who goes simply by his first name, practices a music pure, whose authenticity must have it's origins in his long years of wandering. His music, punk and traditional, coming out of nowhere if not far-away lands, is a sort of cross over whose references are at the same time from some founding fathers of the blues (Charley Patton, Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf for example) but also from another sphere, more alternative and rock: Paul Westerberg, ex-guitarist of the disbanded Replacements, and most of all a band of musicians based in Arizona at Cave Creek. In spite of all this, the music remains rather faithful to the tradition of Delta Blues and this too-short (for me) album, recorded live in the studio with the bassist and producer (of this cd) Dale Warner, and drummer Jimmy Paxton, captures perfectly the spirit (wit/intelligence) of Jeremiah and his music. The singing is raw, mocking, the guitars rough, and the sound crude. It's magical and spellbinding, the type of thing that makes you vibrate... This artist has his sentiments "a fleur de peau" (note from translator: this means he is very sensitive, but I can't think of an idiomatic phrase in English to translate it), the talent to write, the truth at the end of his guitar and the sincerity of a real music. MAGIC!! His objective from here forward: come to do a tour in Europe.
