In M. Night Shyamalan's THE SIXTH SENSE, Bruce Willis plays Dr. Malcolm Crowe, a successful Philadelphia child psychologist who is haunted by the sudden reappearance and suicide of a former patient. Months later Dr. Crowe encounters Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment), a troubled, withdrawn young boy who bears a striking similarity to his earlier patient. Dr. Crowe is compelled to help Cole, not only for the boy's sake, but for his own redemption. As Dr. Crowe struggles to determine what torments Cole, he must also come to terms with his increasingly distant relationship to his wife (Olivia Williams). Meanwhile, Cole is unable to describe the horrible things he sees even to his worried mother (Toni Collette). The scene where Cole finally tells Dr. Crowe about his supernatural secret is one of the 1990s most quoted and well-known cinematic moments. A gripping ghost story with a stunning finale, THE SIXTH SENSE became a surprise blockbuster shortly after its release. The film features Oscar-nominated performances by the startlingly intense Osment and the fiercely maternal Collette, as well as a subtle, subdued turn by Willis. Shyamalan directs his intriguing script with almost clinical precision, using carefully framed visuals to create the film's distinctly chilling atmosphere. On the strength of its pitch-perfect acting and direction, THE SIXTH SENSE has become the most successful thriller of all time.

Theatrical release: August 6, 1999. Shot in Philadephia, Pennsylvania. Director-writer M. Night Shyamalan appears briefly in the film as Dr. Hill, who examines Cole after his injury at the birthday party. THE SIXTH SENSE was nominated for six Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director (Shyamalan), Best Supporting Actor (Osment), Best Supporting Actress (Collette), Best Film Editing, and Best Original Screenplay. Although THE SIXTH SENSE featured Haley Joel Osment's first major film role, he had previously appeared in other movies, including FORREST GUMP. Bruce Willis offered to star in the film for much less than his usual salary, largely based on the strength of the script. Shyamalan's script sold in only one day. THE SIXTH SENSE is one of the top 10 box office grossing films of all time. Shot for an estimated budget of $55 million, the film made over $293 million on its domestic theatrical release alone. Cinematographer Tak Fujimoto also photographed Terrence Malick's BADLANDS and Jonathan Demme's THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS.

Sixth Sense Reviews:

"...SIXTH SENSE is certainly a nervy film, one that director M Night Shyamalan has made so disarmingly eerie it's virtually guaranteed to rattle the most jaded of cages..."-- John Anderson, Los Angeles Times

"...THE SIXTH SENSE has a kind of calm, sneaky self-confidence that allows it to take us down a strange path, intriguingly..." -- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

"...Ominous..." -- Todd McCarthy, Variety

Ranked #10 in Rolling Stone's "Ten Best Movies of 1999" -- "...Hypnotically acted by Haley Joel Osment, Bruce Willis and Toni Colette..." -- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

"...Exquisite performances..." -- Philip Strick, Sight and Sound

"...This intelligent supernatural thriller confidently ventures into the murky territory of childhood and adult fears..." -- Lucy Aitken, Total Film

"...[An] exhilaratingly unexpected ending, which effectively breathes new life into all the previous proceedings..."-- Christine James, Box Office

"...Osment gives one of the decade's great child-actor performances in a demanding role....The filmmaker keeps upping the ante with surprises until the plot-twist beaut that concludes the picture..." -- Mike Clark, USA Today

E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL is Steven Spielberg's warmhearted classic delight for both children and adults. It tells the story of an alien creature, E.T., mistakenly left behind on Earth. When a young boy, Elliott (Henry Thomas), finds E.T. and hides him in his home, both their worlds are changed forever. E.T. teaches Elliott and his two siblings (Drew Barrymore and Robert MacNaughton), whose parents have recently separated, about caring and love while the children protect E.T. from the malevolent world of grown-ups. Elliott and E.T. become so close that they share emotions; as E.T. becomes ill, ...

After ten years in Hollywood, where he made the acclaimed LETTER FROM AN UNKNOWN WOMAN, Max Ophüls returned to France. His first film, LA RONDE, is taken from Arthur Schnitzler's play REIGEN, which features a series of interlocking love stories set in Vienna at the turn of the 19th Century. Ophüls added the visual metaphor of the merry-go-round and a raconteur (Anton Walbrook), who comments on love as the characters move from one partner to another. A student seduces a chambermaid, then, filled with confidence, has an affair with a married woman who goes home to ...

Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey on May 23, 1958. Originally released on Prestige (7316).

Personnel: John Coltrane (saxophone, tenor saxophone); Donald Byrd (trumpet); Red Garland (piano); Paul Chambers (bass instrument); Art Taylor (drums).
Recorded in the late-1950s, the John Coltrane of BLACK PEARLS is not the shining, legendary beacon of free jazz he eventually became by the mid-'60s. At the time of PEARLS, Coltrane was a member of the Miles Davis Quintet, and this was one of his solo ventures. Like many Prestige discs of this period, it's a straight-ahead hard-bop jam session. Featuring sterling accompaniment by Red Garland (also then with Davis) on piano and Donald Byrd's crackling trumpet, PEARLS displays Coltrane's surging sheets-of-sound approach in full flower.
As is often the case with an artist as prolific as John Coltrane, not every release can be considered as essential. Black Pearls seems a bit ambiguous when placed ...

For both comic book fans and those who can't tell the Green Lantern from the Green Arrow, IRON MAN is the type of summer blockbuster whose appeal lasts far beyond the season. Robert Downey Jr. stars as Tony Stark, a billionaire playboy and genius who puts as much effort into chasing skirts as he puts into chasing his next big idea. A trip to Afghanistan to sell weapons quickly devolves into chaos, and Stark finds himself at the mercy of a warlord who wants him to build a missile. Instead, Stark creates a powerful suit of armor, turning him into Iron Man and allowing him to escape. When he returns to America, his assistant Pepper Pots (Gwyneth Paltrow), friend Rhodey (Terrence Howard), and right-hand man Obadiah Stane (Jeff Bridges) all marvel at the change in the man they knew. IRON MAN is the first film to be self-financed by Marvel Studios, and they should be proud of their freshman effort. They didn't take any obvious routes with choosing the cast or crew, and it pays off. Director Jon Favreau, who also has a small role in the film, is best known for directing ELF, but his first action-driven effort is nearly flawless. ...

Master filmmaker Errol Morris turns his keen eye to the Abu Ghraib prison scandal in this intense and provocative documentary. Using interviews with the soldiers that appeared in the now infamous torture photos, Morris strings their stories together with vivid reenactments and striking digital technology for a wrenching look at the events at the prison. With his trademark straight-into-the-lens interview style, it is chilling to see the familiar faces of Lynndie England and Sabrina Harmon as they try to articulate their experiences. The lawlessness and confusion in the prison quickly become evident, and as their stories unfold, the film slowly strips away the many puzzling questions that surround the incidents, exposing a much larger truth about ...
