When mountain-sized flying saucers open fire on the world's cities, a ragtag band of colorful characters sets out to bring the alien critters to their pseudopodic knees. Borrowing liberally from science fiction classics like WAR OF THE WORLDS and THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL and a host of disaster movies from TOWERING INFERNO to METEOR, ID4 maintains a mindless mission to entertain with dazzling special effects and unabashed feel-good charm. With a $71 million budget and mind-blowing special effects, INDEPENDENCE DAY is a grand, high-tech throwback to such films of the 1950s as THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL and WAR OF THE WORLDS. Here, aliens, in numerous gargantuan spaceships, arrive without warning and hover over the world's most important cities, creating global panic. The nasty visitors use death rays to blow New York, Washington D.C, and Los Angeles to smithereens. A handful of plucky Americans, including the Clinton-esque President (Bill Pullman), a gung-ho fighter pilot (Will Smith) and a computer geek named David (Jeff Goldblum), attempt to devise a strategy against the invaders.
On July 4th, their risky plan is put into effect, as dozens of fighter pilots (including the President) wage an assault on the spaceships. However, their success (and the fate of the world) depends on David, who is attempting to disarm the aliens's mothership. Released theatrically in the USA Tuesday July 2, 1996.

Superseding all of Tracy Byrd's previous best-of compilations, the expansive 18-track THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION lives up to its title. As part of the second generation of new traditionalist country stars who learned at the feet of George Strait and Randy Travis, Byrd has always struck a balance between blue-collar good-time party boy and ballad crooner. The two sides are nicely represented here by, among other tracks, the rowdy "Lifestyles of the Not So Rich and Famous" on the one hand, and the weeper "Don't Take Her, She's All I've Got" on the other.
This is the fourth hits compilation devoted to the recordings of Tracy Byrd, but it is the first one to contain tracks from both his MCA/Universal and RCA/BNA Records affiliations, which gives it a leg up on MCA's Keepers: Greatest Hits and BNA's Greatest Hits (not to mention the Byrd entry in MCA's discount-priced 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection series). Thus, it spans Byrd's entire major-label career, which lasted from 1992 to 2004. And unlike those earlier sets, none of which contained more than 12 tracks, this one stretches out to 18 songs and nearly an hour. Even better, those 18 selections constitute all of Byrd's Top 20 country hits in chronological order, from the chart-topping "Holdin' Heaven" to "Drinkin' Bone," including his other number one hit, "Ten Rounds with Jose Cuervo." This foolproof track list and sequencing turns out to present an excellent representation of Byrd, a talented country singer operating in the same neo-traditionalist realm as George Strait who is equally at home with a sentimental ballad or a honky tonk singalong, ...
