Giant Sand mastermind Howe Gelb has been a stalwart desert-rocker since the mid-1980s, turning out a long string of sonic tumbleweeds full of dusty atmosphere and cracked Americana. On his 20th album, the Tom Waits of the mesa continues to refine his singular approach; lonesome piano ballads, Captain Beefheart-esque deconstructed blues, reverb-laden spy-movie fodder, Johnny Cash-on-downers country twang, it's all part of Gelb's arsenal, and his low, laconic singing is the connective tissue holding it all together. PROVISIONS proves that even 23 years into his recording career, Gelb is still essentially the same quirky, hermetic crackpot that we've come to know and love.Spin (p.108) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[With] galumphing rhythms and down-home accents....PROVISIONS has its Southern-fried charms." Magnet (p.106) - "Persistently country-tinged in the first-half, the music bounces pinball-like in the second, with late-night piano balladry, over-caffeinated tango and shattered guitar noise." Mojo (Publisher) (p.102) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[The] album reminds of both Gelb's graceful musical facility and his subtle originality....Restful, intoxicating, sounding gorgeous." Paste (magazine) (p.65) - "Gelb's raps are cooler than a caved gila monster's stomach scales. Often hushed and challenging, his greatest device remains the tactical use of open space, delineated sharply by skeletal guitars and the loose insinuation of movement..." Clash (magazine) (p.110) - "PROVISIONS has a clear Southern identity but remains sonically diverse....A singular triumph..." Giant Sand Provisions Songs Provisions Review

Provisions
$14.89 Never one to tread the expected path, Lucinda Williams followed her big breakthrough album, CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD, with a pair of low-key records full of sad, quiet, fragile songs (interrupted by the occasional barn-burner). LIVE @ THE FILLMORE concentrates heavily on those latter two releases, unleashing all the intense, burning emotions that lay at their core, making plain the inherent frisson lurking below the surface of such ostensibly laconic tunes as "Lonely Girls" and "Righteously." Meanwhile, songs that already had plenty of bite in their studio ...
| | Arcade Fire Funeral CD (2004)
Provisions
$12.05 This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an alternating current of joy and sadness.
Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire's sound seems to come from a lifetime of listening to the Cure, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, and many others--even a dose of soul gets worked into these grand anthems. Chassagne delivers some spellbinding vocals on "Haiti," while the tinkling piano and strings on "Crown of Love" conjure up a heartbroken surfside prom. In 2004, this made many critics' year-end lists, and it's no wonder--the songs on FUNERAL are so packed with unique instrumentation, mesmerizing build-ups, ...
| | Kagemusha DVDs (1980) Widescreen; Special Edition; Subtitled
Provisions
$31.25 In this dazzling epic from Akira Kurosawa, a petty thief named Kagemusha (Tatsuya Nakadai) gets saved from a death sentence because he resembles the warlord Shingen Takeda (also Nakadai). The warlord has been fighting two other leaders for control of 16th-century Japan and impersonators often take his place during battles to put him out of harm's way. Because of Kagemusha's strong physical similarities to the warlord, he's a perfect choice for a "shadow warrior." However, the arrangement suddenly changes when Shingen gets fatally wounded while watching a battle. Adhering to Shingen's final wish, the warlord's men keep the death a secret, and Kagemusha struggles to transform himself from a criminal into a leader.
KAGEMUSHA marked a welcome return for the legendary director, who had not ...

Provisions
$13.05 After 2006's GARDEN RUIN, which downplayed the last half of Calexico's portmanteau name considerably in favor of an alt-folk sound much more in line with their occasional collaborators, Iron and Wine, CARRIED TO DUST is a strong return to the classic Calexico sound. Joey ...
| | Bon Jovi These Days CD (1995) (Import) Bonus Track; England; Remastered; Enhanced CD; Germany
Provisions
$11.99 Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by George Marino (1998, Sterling Sound, New York, New York).
German remastered version comes with enhanced CD video footage of "These Days."
Riding a resurgence in popularity with the triple-platinum success of their greatest-hits package CROSSROADS, Bon Jovi returns with THESE DAYS, their first studio album since 1992's KEEP THE FAITH. And it's obvious that the alterna-rock nihilism exhibited by many of their more angst-ridden peers has affected the band's material, giving the blue-collar romanticism of the Jersey rockers a darker vibe.
Jon Bon Jovi's characters on THESE DAYS weigh in with more mature and darker conflicts than those explored on previous albums. On "Hey God," a family man on the brink of homelessness cries out for spiritual guidance. The title track goes a step further, describing the sheer hopelessness that goes with not having a place to live. Other characters who've lost their way are either on quests of faith ("Something To Believe In") or have found other altars to worship at ("Something For The Pain").
Along with heightened lyrical development, the group's sound continues to evolve away from the usual pop-metal fare. Jon Bon Jovi occassionally drifts into a raspy voice that ...
