| | Ratt Essentials CD Ratt Discography of CDs
One of the icons of the 1980s Los Angeles hard rock circuit, Ratt became quickly known for its memorable hooks and fashionable looks. The band had an undeniable talent for composing hard rock songs with pop sensibilities, which made them accessible to the masses, yet were streetwise enough for the underground. Rhino Records pays homage to Ratt's contributions to rock with this twelve-track anthology. Among the highlights from the band's chart-topping albums are such classic singles as "Way Cool Jr.", "Wanted Man", and the perennial hit "Round and Round".

Essentials songs
$21.94 When Anthrax released AMONG THE LIVING in 1987, the band was a part of a then-burgeoning heavy metal sub-genre called speed or thrash metal. This was an inversion of glam metal. The band members wore worn-out jeans and T-shirts, their long hair was hairspray-free, and not a smudge of make-up was applied to their unsightly mugs. Their music was dense, borrowing speed ...

| | Kiss Unmasked CD (1980)
Essentials songs
$6.49 (MP3 Available for Download) Released in 1980, UNMASKED is the first album by Kiss not featuring the four original members. Although featured on the album cover, drummer Peter Criss was replaced by session man and David Letterman band member Anton Fig. With disco all but dead and new wave setting in, the group took a pop approach with producer Vini Poncia at the helm. While the record may have alienated hard core fans that were used to the band's heavier sound, the record did manage to appeal to Kiss' ever growing kiddie base.
The band's lyrical content remained consistent though, as "Is That You?" describes a vixen-like character close to the group. "Shandi", the only single off the record, ...
| | Mans Wieslander Yet CD (2002)
Essentials album
$14.69 (MP3 Available for Download) Måns Wieslander's third album (his first U.S. release), 2002's Yet is a stripped-down but not barebones affair. Most of the songs sound like they were recorded by Wieslander on his own, but there are just enough outside touches, like the churning cello and machine-gun noise guitar on the dramatic ballad "Unsound," to keep the album from sounding too much like a bedroom four-track production. The problem is that while there are several outstanding tracks here (the aforementioned "Unsound," the lovely "I Don't Think She's Airborne," which marries a Go-Betweens-like acoustic pop tune with appealingly rinky-dink electronic drums and whooshing synths that sound like they came from one of New Order's earliest electronic forays, and the hazy, almost psychedelic "Roadkill" in particular), almost all of them use the same basic template of midtempo melodies and strummy acoustic guitars, making the songs sound ...
| | Lisa Stansfield Complete Collection CD (2003)
Essentials CD music
$83.85 This deluxe, limited-edition box set compiles all of Lisa Stansfield's full-length releases along with 15 extra songs.
Remastered reissues are individually cased in digipaks and are collectively packaged in a box with lift-off top.
Complete Collection is a six-disc, U.K.-only set celebrating the breadth and depth of Lisa Stansfield's extensive and impressive career. It includes her five studio albums -- Affection; Real Love; So Natural; Lisa Stansfield; and Face Up -- as well as an exclusive sixth disc, with recordings from a 1992 Wembley date, club mixes (including a great Massive Attack version of "Live Together"), B-sides, and three songs from Stansfield's Blue Zone days. Not enough? Each studio album is augmented with at least two bonus tracks. Complete Collection is definitely the most comprehensive Lisa Stansfield retrospective; it borders on overkill. But since it's only ...

| | Metallica Death Magnetic CD (2008) Japan; Remastered; Super-High Material
Essentials songs
$29.55 The world at large got a fly-on-the-wall view of the creation of Metallica's 2003 album, ST. ANGER, via the documentary SOME KIND OF MONSTER, so we know they consciously tried to keep things contemporary at that time by avoiding fleet-fingered solos and eschewing the sound of the "old" Metallica. If that hoary old term "return to form" ever applied to a rock album, though, it's ANGER's follow-up, DEATH MAGNETIC.
In the five years between the two releases, Metallica seem to have gotten back in touch with the raw power of their classic period, with a little help from legendary producer Rick Rubin. One listen to the 10-minute epic "Suicide & Redemption" with its mix of raw rock ferocity and complex musical development should ...
