A photographer recovering from a broken leg enlivens his hours of convalescence by taking up voyeurism. Though it's initially Miss Torso, an attractive dancer, who gets his attention, he quickly becomes more fascinated by the Thorwalds, a bickering couple across the yard. When he thinks a murder has taken place, the suspense begins. REAR WINDOW is a true Hitchcock masterpiece.

The weather is getting hotter, and photographer L.B. Jefferies (Jimmy Stewart) is stuck in his apartment with a broken leg and nothing to do--that is, nothing to do but spy on his neighbors through their open windows across the way in the apartment complex. There's an attractive and scantily clad dancer, a songwriter, a lonely woman, and the Thorwalds (Raymond Burr and Irene Winston), a bickering couple, among others. But when Mrs. Thorwald disappears, Jefferies is sure that something's wrong. Soon, despite the warnings of his girlfriend, Lisa (Grace Kelly), and his motherly nurse, Stella (Thelma Ritter), Jefferies has out his binoculars and telephoto lens and is studying his neighbor "like a bug under glass." However, looking in from the outside might not be as safe as Jefferies assumes. REAR WINDOW is not only a gripping story of murder and suspense, it is a celebrated allegory on the nature of film itself, a story in which the audience watches Jefferies watch the story unfold. The different windows represent the various different stories that are often told on film and also can be seen as representing the coming of television, as Jefferies can watch a multitude of "shows" from the comfort of his own apartment.

Theatrical release: New York, August 1953. Hitchcock cameo: Hitchcock can be seen winding a clock in the apartment of the songwriter about 30 minutes into the film. REAR WINDOW was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 1997. Hitchcock was nominated for the Best Director Oscar but lost out to Elia Kazan for ON THE WATERFRONT REAR WINDOW is number 42 on the American Film Institute's list of America's 100 Greatest Movies. Snippets of other music heard in the film include Leonard Bernstein's score for the ballet FANCY FREE and the song "Mona Lisa." The film was remade in 1998 as a TV movie starring wheelchair-bound Christopher Reeve.

Rear Window Reviews:

"...Everything from the masterly opening sequence to the ambiguous final shot indicates that this is the work of a prodigiously talented director..." -- 5 out of 5 stars -- Tom Dawson, Total Film

"...[New print details] give the movie a sharpness that underscores the whole subtext..." -- Rating: A -- Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

"...Kelly is cool and elegant here....REAR WINDOW lovingly invests in suspense all through the film, banking it in our memory, so that when the final payoff arrives, the whole film has been the thriller equivalent of foreplay..." -- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

"With its voyeuristic theme, witty screenplay and romantic star chemistry, the ever-popular James Stewart-Grace Kelly masterpiece may be the most prototypical Alfred Hitchcock movie..." -- Mike Clark, USA Today

"Hitchcock was a master of this space, his shots coordinated to the inch....Where VERTIGO sported it deviancy on the surface, the even better REAR WINDOW possesses a more wicked intent: we're all in this horrid game together."-- Ian Nathan, Empire

5 stars WHAT CAN BE SAID ABOUT THIS CLASSIC
Hitch is the master of suspense and the greatest director in the history of cinema. This classic film touches on everything in Hitchcock, his ways of anticipating the audience, his dark humour, the enchanting blonde, the technical achievement and the masterful storytelling and imagery. This film has everything that made Hitchcock famous. His sheer consistency really showed in this film. Some critics even debate that this is the best film to show somebody when they want to know about Hitch's talents. I can't disagree. This film touches on everything in Hitchcock. Jimmy Stewart plays a wheelchair bound journalist observing life across the courtyard of his apartment. He begins spying on his neighbours and witnesses various dramas unfolding. Grace Kelly plays the enchanting blonde woman that tries to lure Jimmy Stewart into living the cool and perfect life she lives in. It's almost two great stories combined into one classic film that deals with voyeurism, love, guilt, sex and murder. Rear Window is Hitchcock at his everlasting best.

5 stars The second greatest Hitch film
Without a doubt this film is one of the greatest films ever made. Most critics consider this to be Alfred Hitchcocks greatest film behind Psycho. I can't disagree. This movie is a masterpiece and shows just how much Hitchcock was able to manipulate the camera and show his great technical brilliance. Jimmy Stewart plays a wheel-chair bound journalist who begins spying on his neighbours and discovery different dramas through his window. The plot is so simple, yet so effective and keeps you thinking. Grace Kelly is Jimmy Stewarts co-star and she is one of the greatest actresses ever. Jimmy Stewart was the perfect guy to play the wheel-chair bound journalist because he is such an ordinary looking guy and plays his role so well. The ending is the greatest scene in the movie. You must buy this dvd. It's a must see and it's truly a masterpiece of HItchcocks construction.

5 stars This masterpiece is more revered and admired than ever.
Alfred Hitchcock once commented that his films go from (critical) failures to masterpieces without ever becoming successes. In the case of "Rear Window", this observation wouldn't apply. The film was an immediate critical and box-office success when released in 1954. It is also that rare film that fits into multiple genres (Mystery, Suspense, Film Noir, Black Comedy). Its the perfect Hitchcock film, the one that illustrates nearly all his major strengths. It represents the director at his best for the way it works on many levels, yet conceals it's own complexity. James Stewart is also the perfect Hitchcock character, an ordinary-looking, unpretentious man who becomes enmeshed in extraordinary, nightmarish events. This is one of the continuing motifs in a Hitchcock film and "Rear Window" (like "North By Northwest") is the shining example. Hitchcock knows precisely what he wants. His films were completed in his head and on his storyboards before he ever stepped onto his set. The creativity and brilliance of the film had all taken place before. "Rear Window" has never ceased to amaze and impress. After 50 years, I can only imagine the incredible impact this brilliant film will continue to make for future audiences.

Find out in this awesomely disgusting--and disgustingly awesome--satire from director Lloyd Kaufman (THE TOXIC AVENGER). Meanwhile, a man named Arbie (Jason Yachanin) is trying to win back his ex-girlfriend Wendy (Kate Graham). Credited with inventing the genre of the modern horror film, PSYCHO has had its share of sequels and imitators, none of which diminishes the achievement of this shocking and complex horror thriller. Alfred Hitchcock's choreography of elements in PSYCHO is considered so perfect it inspired a shot-by-shot remake by Gus Van Zant in 1998. However, Hitchcock's black-and-white original, featuring Anthony Perkins's haunting characterization of lonely motel keeper Norman Bates, has never been equaled. Bates presides over an out-of-the-way motel under the domineering specter of his mother. The young, well-intentioned Bates is introduced to the audience when Marion Crane (Janet Leigh), a blonde on the run with stolen money, checks in for the night. But Momma doesn't like loose women, so the stage is set for this classic tale of horror--and one of the most famous scenes in film history. PSYCHO was initially received by audiences with shock and amazement--and it still terrifies today. Though it is now considered prototypical Hitchcock, its setting, pace, and emphasis on terror were major departures for the director at the time, coming after the more classically grand NORTH BY NORTHWEST. VERTIGO is Alfred Hitchcock's haunting tale of deception, madness, and death--a masterful exploration of fantasy and anxiety. The film ranks with REAR WINDOW as one of the director's most closely studied films for its psychological complexity, while the obsession of its protagonist--John "Scottie" Ferguson (James Stewart)--can also be seen to parallel that of Hitchcock's own fascination with the icy-blonde leading lady he re-created at the center of so many of his films. Ferguson is a retired detective, his career ended by the onset of a paralyzing fear of heights. An old friend, the wealthy Gavin Elster (Tom Helmore), hires Ferguson to follow his wife (Kim Novak), whom, he explains, has grown obsessed with an ancestor of hers. The assignment, however, draws Ferguson out of his comfortable role as observer and into a complex web of intrigue, mingled with the detective's own fantasies and fears. Stewart gives an exceptional performance as the disintegrating detective, while Novak, who was left largely undirected by Hitchcock, conveys a subtle and powerful psychological journey. Another star of the film is its San Francisco setting. VERTIGO is considered one of Hitchcock's most complex, finest films. Twenty years ago in the sleepy mining town of Valentine Bluffs, a fatal mining disaster occurred on Valentine's Day while key members of the crew were decorating for a party. The sole survivor of the accident killed the absentee crew members and warned the town never to have another Valentine's Day celebration. When a group of teenagers decides that the the town has gone without a party long enough and begin planning one, a murderous maniac in mining gear begins dispatching townsfolk in bloody and creative ways. Combining the small town atmosphere of HALLOWEEN (1978) with the body count gore of FRIDAY THE 13TH (1980), MY BLOODY VALENTINE is an example of the glut of low-budget copycat films that those two influential films inspired in the early 1980s. One of the most brilliant of all German silent films, F.W. Murnau's THE LAST LAUGH uses a constantly moving and subjective camera to capture the emotional anguish of a man whose life is suddenly devoid of meaning. Because of his age, an elderly doorman at a hotel finds himself ignominiously demoted to washroom attendant. Particularly galling to the poor man is the loss of his uniform, which gives him pride and prestige. Crestfallen, he spends the day wandering the city, getting drunk and dreaming of suicide, mourning the loss of his dignity, and trying desperately to hang on to a shred of hope. One of the crowning achievements of the German expressionist movement, Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau's film stars Emil Jannings as an aging doorman whose happiness crumbles when he is relieved of the duties and uniform which has for years been the foundation of his happiness and pride. The film becomes more than the plight of a single doorman, but a mournful dramatization of the frustration and anguish of the universal working class. Restored in 2003, this edition is presented with unprecedented clarity and a new orchestral recording of the original 1924 score.
